i need help re. hard drive features

i m thinking of buying a maxtor hard drive; what should i be looking for besides size?

What' s more important? larger size or larger rpm (with the realistic assumption that i can't afford the best of the best of course :); i have seen some at 5400 rpm and some at 7200 rpm.

Is Maxtor a good brand or I should consider others like Western Digital?

Thanks guys

Maxtor is better than Western Digital (I find WD one of the worst, but many have no problems with them).
Well this subject has been touched on a few times, but again I will say go for models displaying:
D740X or D540X.
Both are 7200rpms ATA133.

This is if you plan on making them your master drive.
If you only want a HDD for backup/storage, then just go for large size & rpms don't matter much.

thanks shadoe phantom

Actually, this drive would be the second additional hard drive on this computer; i use it for data storage mostly, but i'd be accessing the data quite regularly, so would that still make the rpm not as important as the size?

I am planning on installing it by myself for the first time, so hopefully i wont ruin it.

BTW, i saw 2 models of maxtor hd on sale this week ; should i get the bigger but slower model?

1/ Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive for $110 US

2/ 160GB, 5400RPM, Internal Ultra ATA/133 EIDE Hard Drive for $150 US

I would go with the 160 gig,a good deal for 40$ more.Rpm shouldn't be too big of a deal.Larger drives create a lot of heat at higher RPM ,so it looks like the 160 is the way to go.

Maybe Shadoe can give more input...Just my opinion.;)

I agree with woody.
From the 80Gig & up the HDDs tend to get hotter than normal. So you should always make sure you have some fan or something on it to keep them cooler.
Seek time (rmps) isn't going to matter for storage files (unless really really slow lol) 'cause you're not using it to run programs/apps off. Just using it for storage. So I would deffinately go for the bigger drive (if within your budget).
Even if you do plan to run a couple of apps off of it one day, it isn't a big deal (as long as it isn't the main drive, otherwise your system will bog down but not by much).
Setting this up as a storage won't be hard either. Just stick it as your slave to the master drive off the same IDE ribbon if you like.
Simplest method (though format through dos alone *without the other drive first), unless it is already preformatted (but I never trust that).
Good luck

Yep,I have 3 HD's.Two are ATA 100@ 7200 RPM.The third is ATA100@ 5400Rpm...the difference is almost negligible.

Oh, we have 4 Maxtor HD's in this house. No problems with any(fingers crossed).:)
