Hi all, my first post

I bought a pioneer 106 about two weeks ago and have been successfully burned about 10 dvds using verbatim dvd-r. The softwares I used are dvd decrypter, dvdshrink and copytodvd (trial version).

Here is the problem:

Yesterday I tried to burn using verbatim dvd+r. After it finished (no error at all, speed 1x), my apex ad-2500 dvd player couldn't recognize it, so it's a coaster.
Then I tried a memorex dvd+r (media code RICOHJPNR00, write speed 4x), same thing, coaster(even my pc dvd-rom won't recognize it)!
I then tried to lower the write speed to 2x in copytodvd, I got another coaster (memorex).
Finally I put a verbatim dvd-r into the writer and burnt with copytodvd and it worked fine.

So what's going on here? anyone has any similiar experience? Pls help, thanks a lot!!

Looks like you have a very picky Apex, which is the first Apex that I heard of to be picky.
This is what they say at DVDRHelp. Welcome to the wonderful world of burning. :D
Thanks for the reply.

hmm...so you think it's the apex problem? but how come my dvd-rom doesn't recognize it either? (after I put the dvd+r into dvd-rom, the powerdvd won't come up, then I tried file explorer, clicked on the dvd-rom driver, it says "please insert a disc" somthing like that)

unfortunately, my another dvd player toshiba sd-1200 doesn't play dvd+r.

Sounds more like you've created a DVD+R coaster. Have you created other +R's? Have they worked on the standalone or the computer? Maybe try doing it at 1X and see if it makes a difference.

No, I haven't created other +Rs other than those 3 coasters (2 verbatim, 1 memorex). I am going to try 1x tonight. I will let you know.

Personally...I think the dual format of the Pioneers...was more of a selling tactic...pioneer is geared mainly for the DVD -R format

tried one more time with memorex dvd+r, set write speed to 1x in copytodvd, still burnt with 2.4x (i don't know why), another coaster!!

man, I am really pissed, looks like i have to stick with dvd-r.

Anyone any suggestion? thx

I have a A06 and i have burnt many verbatim 4x DVD+Rs discs. also many 2.4 x discs of other brands

i have also burnt 4x DVD+R verbatims on my sony DRU-500A even though the dru-500a is supposed to only burn 2.4x DVD+R, i think its because i have the latest firmware

I am definitely a newbie in terms of upgrading FW. (That's one reason I chose pioneer instead of nec in the first place!)

Anyway, need more help pls.

Chickenman, I followed your link and downloaded the jsp file. What am I supposed to do next? Do I need to download any utility to upgrade it?

Thanks!

I really have no idea what the jsp file you downloaded is/was or where you got it from. In the line Pioneer DVR-A06/106D - 1.06 [NEW] , just click on the small 1.06 and download the file R6FW106.EXE. Shut all programs down and then just run it and follow the simple instructions it gives. It will then automatically upgrade the F/W for you.

I just tried right clicked on the link, and I got file R6FW106.EXE. Stupid me!! (if you just click on the link, it will give you the name R6FW106.EXE.jsp, same size acutally).

Thanks a lot, will try tonight.

no go

I successfully flashed the F/W to 1.06, then tried copytodvd to burn a memorex dvd+r (write speed 2.4x), I got another coaster!! Help pls!!

Then I would suggest your DVD Player doesnt like the Memorex dvd+r's, try a better brand. Suggest you try the ones you have called coasters in other friends/neighbours PC and DVD Players as well. If any of them play them, then its a media and/or dvd player problem.

Easyiest solution is to stay with -R media anyway.

Thanks CM. mostly like I have to stay with -R.

BTW, I DID try my pc dvd-dom to play the so-called coasters, it didn't work. Also I also tried verbatim +R, still no good. I will try my friend's dvd player later...

Thanks again for all the help.

Memorex is just a stamper, not a media maker. Who's the real maker of those media?
I really didn't pay attention to it, but the media code is RICOHJPNR00. When I get home, I will take a close look at it. Thanks!
