Hurricane

I'm watching the hurricane move into Louisianna, Missippi and Alabama. Parts of LA are uner 4 feet of water with winds up to 120 mph. Most of the people evacuated. A large number of them have come to this area of the country, where everything should skirt around us.

Unbelievable devestation and loss of life. So many still clinging on to the tops of their houses. 25 ft. wall of water going through Biloxi, Mississippi. The news is saying this is probably the worst natural disaster to ever hit the US.
Winds are still at 50 mph hitting Tennessee today, and more tornado activity expected around it.

Bodies floating in the water in Louisianna. One man was interviewed. He was on the roof with his wife and her hand sliped from his. He has no idea what happened to her. He doesn't know where to go, he doesn't know where he is. The reporter was crying.
My heart is breaking.

OMG!!!!!
This is pure horror!!
My deepest prayers, sympathy and condolences for everyone who's in that disaster,or lost a beloved person in it..... :( :(

Such events bring out the best in people, with selfless acts of heroism, and the worst, with armed looting diverting police from rescue work.

One question that must be asked, what can be done to prevent such devastation in the future, and if that can't be answered, should they rebuild on land which requires permanent flood defences?
It seems the worst of the problems are not from the hurricane itself, but from the damage to flood defences.

In the UK now, I believe you cannot get insurance on properties that lie on a known flood plain.

Brings another point up, actually, is there going to be a crisis in the insurance industry because of this?

I have a friend who lost his family home in this disaster. It was an over 200 years old Spanish style manor in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

I spent several holidays down there when we were kids. Mardi Gras, the Jazz, Cajun food, Bourbon Street, the Mississippi river front... great memories etched in my memories. It all won't quite be the same for a while me thinks.

My heart goes out to my friend and all the others that have suffered losses in all this. If you have the ability to lend a hand or make a donation, money, blood, etc. please do so.
