Please help. We have one of these lovely drives and cannot find tech support to trouble shoot the problem we are having with it. I will read regular cds - I can put cds in like AOL or other software cds and it reads them just fine, however, when I place a blank cdr, one that meets it's specifications (as per the feurio site's cdr hardware info sheet), it simply will not acknowledge the blank! I can't believe it's the hardware, because it is able to read, therefore my guess is software? I am new to this who cdr & cdrw gig and am pretty sure something is wrong in my setup; Aspi layer / esdi adapter vs. scsi adapter / dma / etc. Does anyone know how to set this thing up on an Intel Pentium III, Seattle Mo'board, using Windows Me and Nero and/or BHA? I guess I need help with the hardware setup, the bios setup and the software settings. If possible, can anyone recommend a blank cdr that this drive likes?

Thanks so much! (the drive was original equipment on an HP Pavilion XL800 series and yes, I've tried HP tech support, at least what I could find on there website without having to pay $40 to ask someone a question about they're product! I even had an online chat with a philips rep who referred me back to HP - gee, thanks...)

more info

I'm sorry I forgot to say Hello all!

More Info: Cleaned aspi layer back to 4.6 (newer versions nothing but problems!) The philips guy i talked to said it may be a faulty drive but I hate to give up on the thing since I know so little about it. any advice you can offer will be mucho appreciated.

Do you have the "Hide Media" function in CloneCD or Alcohol 120% activated? If so disable this function.

about ASPI: version 4.6 (1021) this is the most recommended version often also called ForceASPI 1.7;

Which Nero version?
Have you other/additional burning software installed. They may cause problems with Nero.
Any Packet Writer? InCD?

Distilling from another forum:
1. This is a troubled drive
2. It dislikes VIA chipsets (though yours is not)
3. May be better as Secondary Master
4. ASPI fix sometimes helps
5. Firmware version 2.5 fixes some issues

I'm trying to distill the salient comments from a 17 page thread - that should tell you how TROUBLED this drive is.

I do not have CloneCD or Alcohol 120% installed, what are the benefits of these programs?

Sadly, I just went through the ASPI 4.6 version learning curve, so yes, my aspi layer is squeaky clean and whole in it's 4.6 ver integrity (yup, Force ASPI worked like a charm! - found it today)

Nero version 5.5.9.24 & CDRWIN 3.9D. Haven't learned about packet writers yet, but if my guess is correct in what your talking about, I believe HP has a program available BUT if the cdrw was "bundled" (I absolutely despise that word, that and "pop") in with a preconfigured system like the sucky Pavilion series, they make it damn near impossible to find the download on their site; they want you to use the recovery software issued or Microsofts Windows Update. Through some detective work I am on the verge of discovering what model info they assigned to this drive for stand alone sales. Once i find that out, then I can get the correct firmware and other downloads for this stupid drive. If this doesn't happen, is INCD a recommended alternative, if so where may I find the download?

I firmly believe it is not the drive that is so troubled, but rather the ya-hoos who are supposed to support it! For example, HP Pavilion XL 848 series desktop (circa. 2000) was sold under the premise that it was taylor made for WIN ME, yet, the HP site has absolutely ZERO access to driver updates, etc for WIN ME, it does, however, support WIN2K! Also, the manual for the drive doesn't list WIN ME as a supported OS - it lists every other version of Windows, but not ME! I think someone got confused when they were puting this "bundle" (yeeeeeechghsh) together. The support they offer for this product series is total crap. I tried Philips, but they said noooooway, HP has the support contract for that drive. Typical passing of the proverbial buck...

Thank you all so much for your efforts with helping me. I will be more than happy to pass the favor on and complete the peer 2 peer happy helper karmic loop! Let me know if any other info comes your way!

Thanks again!

both are game CD copy programs with integrated virtual drives and a "Hide Media (ATIP)" function; this function can cause such problem like yours; that's why i asked about; :)
no need for you to install one of these applications, if you won't backup protected game CDs;

Nero version 5.5.9.24 & CDRWIN 3.9D.
i think Nero and CDRWIN 3.9 can friendly coexist;
you may try to update Nero to the currently most recommended version 5.5.10.42;

InCD is a paket writer and sometimes it will not conflict with Nero;
"a recommended alternative" is to install non, nothing, no one paket writer, simply avoid them; they can also cause problems exactly like yours (besides the generally data loss on CD-RW);
