howto remove the mediaplayer in xp ???

Personnaly I've done like this :

1) renamed wmplayer.exe ( located in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player ) and refused the restore file processing
2) cleaned the registry with regcleaner , jv16pt and regclean (yes !)
3) associated mp3 files with winamp , avi files with bsplayer ...

It works well this way for me

Hope this helps

install SP1, after this you should have an uninstall option in Control Panel > Software > Windows Components;

The uninstall process does not really uninstall it just hides some files and suppress some shortcuts, but the associations between media files and WMP remain ...
The only way I've found is described above ...

sergio is correct, it really only hides it. Sadly Windows Media Player is so integrated into M$ operating systems that rooting it out will destroy Windows itself.

Personally I run most of my media files though QuickTime 6 and Winamp. On the ocassional time that I have no choice but windows media extensions, I let it run. No big woop, but I don't really care to use it much either ;)

You can associate those files with wmp 6.4........it's still available on XP,and a much lighter footprint on your system's resources than wmp8 or 9...:)
