how to get rid of virus?

i got f-secure anti-virus 5.40, i just scan my computer and it found a worm in a .rar file. i try disenfecting/rename/delete with f-secure but it wont do anything. since f-secure cant do anything about it, is there another way to get rid of it?

thanks in advance

can you just not delete the file !? right click and delete then emptry the recycle bin ?

try rebooting in safemode and delete from there ! ;)

I don't belive many can disinfect WITHIN archives.

If the virus IS disinfectable, you may have to unpack the archive first, otherwise delete it, or erase with a secure erase tool if worried.

A virus within an archive is not active until both unpacked and executed, so be very wary of self-extracting, or allowing your archive program to run any install/setup automatically

thanks for the reply viper,LTR. yes i can manually delete it, but wouldnt it be still in my computer? that's why i havent delete it yet. i'll do it now

thanks agian for the reply :)

btw, i try unpacking it but it was still in the .rar file

if you delete it, use something that cleans/bleaches/dissinfects,/wipes it out completely (usually with wiping it 4-7 times).
Forget the names of a few good programs for this but am sure someone will mention some (I use steganos destroy)

Which virus did it say anyway?
If it's a real nasty one, you need to be more worried than if it's a relatively simple one.

Packed in the archive, the virus is harmless!
Unpacked but not executed, the virus is harmless - and might be cleanable (and will certainly be deletable by the AV, if it isn't cleanable).

The archive itself, may be discarded without risk - though I'd at least use a SHIFT-Delete on it to avoid it hanging around in the recycle bin, or empty the bin after - and then repaet the AV scan and make sure you come up clean!

MOST AV programs cannot clean or delete within archives - and deleting the entire archive would be a rather strong step to take.

thanks for the reply guys, i'll try cyberscrub. i forgot what virus it was, but it was a worm. it was in a crack for zonealarm. funny thing is i had f-secure 5.31 and it found the worm, after i upgraded f-secure to 5.40, it didnt find it. even after i downloaded the update.

btw, thanks for the link blakie
