How to download from WinXP catalog?

Ok, I applied XP SP1 (build 1106) this afternoon. I was using a key I generated from blues?! keygen. The install went PERFECTLY as did the reboot.......no "windows needs activated" BS. Everything is as it was except now I'm at SP1. :)

So I headed to MS's Windows XP Catalog to manually grab updates and to avoid the dreaded windowsupdate.com. I selected a ton of stuff but when I went to my download basket, "download now" was greyed out. All of the items I selected to download with the ADD button were listed and I could only select REMOVE. No downloadie for me. :(

WTF? MS win? Is this the result of a blackflag!?!? I mean, XP is running great........but maybe I'm locked out of applying ANY updates?!? I doubt this is the case but who knows......maybe user error or MS is better than we thought?

John1290 here........taking the bullet so you won't have to. :)

Your not alone

Not worried as I think the problem is that Java security issue update is critical and will not let you progress further until it's satisfied. Microshaft in its infinate wisdom has yet to correct the loop caused by this yet. Strange that there would be any updates available as I thought thats what SP1 was supposed to do!

What Java security issue update? Could you please elaborate on that one. As for your comment on updates being availible.....when using the catalog, it displays ALL updates and you have to just "know" what you've applied already and what you haven't. It's nowhere near as friendly as windowsupdate.com but it's the only option avail until somebody can release a patch/registry fix that gets around windowsupdate.com screwing up your PC after you update XP.

No Problems today

Being the lazey sort I prefer to use update. I have installed java and update did not like it. Yesterday update hung up (imagine that) and would not download but all is fine today as am able to update just fine. Again no problems with SP1 installed on legit(wink-wink) XP.

Download size: 5.1 MB, 3 minutes
This update resolves the "Java Applet Can Redirect Browser Traffic" security vulnerability in the Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM) on Windows XP and Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), and is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-013.

So I need that update before I can get the 'download now' option to un-grey itself? As for continuing to use windowsupdate.com....what do you plan on doing once MS starts verifying keys? Or r ya gonna throw caution to the wind and risk it all? :)

Livin on the edge

I use a multiboot with many diff os. Pita to reload some proggys back-n-forth but is not something I worry about. I may be nieve or everyone else may be just paranoid but whats life without alittle spice?

The only way to be safe is to find a real Corp key. MS must have a database with all authentic keys and it will be easy for them to include a check for these on Winupdate. But a corp key is used on several systems and all they know is how many PC,s a key is supposed to be used for. And if all licensed users try to use WinUpdate at the same time then it will be hard to see if there are to many in use. They can monitor the IP but today most users get IP,s that change from time to time. The EULA don´t give them the right to get any personal info..only the regkey, version info etc. However if XP is patched in a known way it will be easy for MS to see this on Update..and OK as well.
Therefore a genuine key is the only way to be safe.
Second is to skip WinUpdate and get the updates manually.
