Setting up FTP

If your willing to leave your computer on all the time you could download web server software, there are lots of programs like this but I recommend Apache.

If you use Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro you can set up IIS (Which is shitty and I don't recommend) or for Windows 98 on the Add-Ons part of the CD-ROM you have PWS (Personal web server)... which is also shit.

With Apache I'm sure you can set up your own FTP and host files, websites and provide accounts/webspace etc from your own computer.

PM me for more help if needed and if need be I can help you set up Apache, IIS, PWS. (I'm on MSNMS, Yahoo! and logged into CDRSOFT IRC channel a lot).

Or, cut out all the hassle and go the newbie easy route. Why in the name of God anyone who doesn't even know how to set up an ftp in the first place is being pointed towards something as complex as apache (no!) or IIS (no!) baffles me.

"Instead of taking over an hour to set up IIS, it only took at most five minutes to get your FTP server up and running!"
Have you ever wondered how to setup an FTP Server?

Find other FTP Servers too tricky or fiddly?

Just try BPFTP Server!

The most simple and powerful FTP server to install and manage for Windows.

The only one which gives you total control over connected users: kick/ban/spy/give credit and much more!

So easy and intuitive that we wonder why we made a help file! All features available from an easy to use graphical interface!

The easiest way to distribute all your files quickly and simply.

Install bulletproof ftp, a tiny little 1MB download
/http://www.bpftpserver.com

And you'll also like to grab an ip redirecting service. I personally use the free one from NOIP

why? Allows people to connect to your copmputer without needing to know what your IP is. If you're like me, on ADSL, your IP changes every time you connect. Few people around here shall have a static ip, because they're expensive. Cable modem users generally have a fairly static IP, although it's not *guaranteed* to be as such. Thus, IP redirectors are the way to go. Basically, you register yourself at a site liek noip.com, and choose a hostname. You download a small app (an updating client) from the same people, and whenever your IP changes, this little app knows all about it and redirects requests to (eg) "billy.servebeer.com" to your current IP.

The world is filled with people who believe things are far more complex than they really are. Bane of my life. :D

- all done by the app. Help files for it walk you through step by step. By the way, ratio ftps suck. Share, and be shared with. I won't go near a ration ftp at this low level of users. That sort of crap is reserved for topsites and zeroday.

A very simple software to turn your hard drive to ftp server is FTP Serv-U.

* Lots of security: Passwords, read/write/append/modify rights per directory
or file for each user (including ANONYMOUS), access on the basis of IP-number.
* Supports multiple simultaneous users and transfers.
* Both in 16- and 32-bit, fast, and rock solid!
* Support for UL/DL ratios, disk quota limitations, network bandwidth limiting, and automatic anti-anti-time-out plus anti-hammering measures.
* Users can be put into groups for easy maintenance of large numbers.
* Access to all drives on your PC, including network drives.
* A quite complete (and strict) implementation of RFC959 and RFC1123,
including support for passive mode transfers.
* Supports resuming of file uploads and downloads, as well as 'ls'
options and 'links' like those in UNIX.
* Full support for multi-homed IP sites, running multiple 'virtual' FTP servers with a single instance of FTP Serv-U.
* Supports S/KEY one-time passwords.
* Configurable messages for sign-on, sign-off, login, and directory changes.
* Has a 'time-out' feature, so connections are automatically cleared when idle or hung.
* Easy to setup and maintain through menus. For automated maintenance the settings are stored in an .INI file of simple format.
* Has an open architecture which makes monitoring, changing and extending the server behavior possible through external DLLs.
* Logs all transactions to file and screen that can be read by other applications. Includes unique session IDs, time, and date stamps.
* Log file can be read by other applications while open, or transferred
through FTP Serv-U.

Servu is a nice easy to set up proggy. When you first start let the wizard do the work until you are competant to do it yourself. Here are some dns services

h**p://www.dtdns.com/
h**p://www.deerfield.com/
Thats if you aint got a static IP

It's cool that you want to share your stuff, but be VERY careful about making it public. Your FTP might become a tagged pub overnight. :( I'd start off in the "Traders" forum here on the site. They seem to watch each other's backs pretty good. I think it would be okay to ask a trading question over there. ;)

thinkof it this way. you set up a ratio, and more than likely, you'll end up with a stack of crap you don't want.

With FTP's, its best to just share, with a few rules so that people don't take the pi55, and if they do, the rules were violated, so they can't whine when you ban them.

warez and all that crap is a steady path of learning. the more you help out, the more likely somone else is gonna help you.

It pays off. I virtually guarantee that I have axx to all sorts of crap that members in here would just dribble at.

And I'm an amoeba in the food chain :D

ah, and trading sucks. topsites and all, yeah, it's necesarry. But way down "here", people should just frigging help each other out if & when they can.

/philosophy

That's what it's like at 'my' forum, and it owns.

Followed your instructions Wlof....works a treat and now I have my own FTP server up and running.

Took no time at all...got the bullet proof server app' and went to no-ip and sorted that out...

Excellent advice there mate, thanx very much :)
