How can I save a single video from a DVD as an mpeg file?

Hi,
I'm wondering if there is a program that will allow me to capture a video from a DVD as an mpeg file. The VOB files on a DVD are almost never an entire video, they are usually split...

For example, let's say I had one of the new Simpson's DVD's, and I wanted to just save one entire episode as an mpeg file, without copying the whole disc...is there a program that will let me do that? Thanks.

Use DVDDecrypter in IFO mode, then remux to an mpg. Unless you mean a specific kind of mpg, like VCD, in which case you need to re-encode.

Yep, just use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode as C_D said, but set in Options/IFO Mode/ set the File Splitting to NONE. Hit the big ripper button and soon you will have 1 large *.VOB file, simple rename to *.MPG.

Ok, cool...man, DVD Decrypter does everything...

How do I change the VOB to an mpeg file though? I don't think you can just rename it can you?

Also, is there a good editing program that can fix audio sync problems? I made a DVD a long time ago...it was like the first one I ever made...and I stupidly deleted all the source files from the Hard Drive before I found out the audio was out of sync on the DVD, so that's why I wanted to save the files as mpegs, and then try to fix the audio as best as I could. Any ideas? Thanks for your help...

Yes you can , I do this all the time. I even go the other way as well :D Also, best would be to turn on Stream Processing when in IFO mode and tick only the Video and Audio stream you want. That keeps the final mpeg file the smallest and not cluttered with unwanted Audio & Subs.

OK, how exactly do I rename the file in Windows XP? I right clicked on it, and selected "rename"...but no matter what I change the name to (i.e. xxx.mpg)...it still stays a VOB file. The file name doesn't have the suffix on it to begin with, so how do I change it?

A fundamental basic need in any video converting, turn Windows Explorer to Detail view (piss those nice coloured Icon off!) and turn on all files extensions (Tools/Folder Options/View and untick "Hide Extensions 0f Known File Type").
