How can I prevent video/audio sync problems?

Basically, I never have Audio/Video sync problems if I record my videos (using a video capture card) in DVD compatible mpeg-2 format...but if I try to burn files that were recorded in regular mpeg-2 format, or .avi/DivX, or if I try to burn a file that I downloaded that is not in DVD Comp. mpeg-2 format, I almost always have at least some of the audio out of sync with the video. So I want to know how I can prevent this. I don't mind recording in DVD mpeg-2 format all the time, in fact it saves a lot of converting time...but I'd like to be able to burn some .avi files that I downloaded without getting audio sync problems. Does anyone know what the problem might be and how I can fix it?

I read the post by ChickenMan on how to fix Audio/Video sync problems, and I noticed it said that this is usually caused by problems with the Codec and/or the software. If that is the case, is there some way I can find out what Codecs I have installed, and whether or not they are conflicting with each other or with my software?

Currently I am using Ulead DVD Movie Factory 3 Disc Creator, and the Leadtek WinFast TV 2000 XP capture card. Windows XP Professional, Pentium 4, 256 mb RAM.

I sometimes get sync problems. Trying to merge files in TMPEGenc always was problematic. I get better reults with MainConcept and Nero Vision Express.

You can run the AVI through GSpot and it will tell you what codecs are loaded/used.

I just tried using MainConcept's mpeg encoder, and I still had audio sync problems towards the end of the video. Thats the same problem I usually have. Does my problem sound like it would be caused more be the mpeg codec, or the DivX codec, or both? How can I find out if I have bad codecs, and once I find out, how can I remove them?

I figured out how to see what codecs are loaded (in System Information)...but I don't know how to tell if they are bad or conflicting or not? How can I find out?

I really like the Ulead DVD Movie Facotry 3 Disc Creator software I'm using, but if anyone thinks my software is part of the problem, maybe you can reccomend something better? Thanks for any help anyone can give.

You say you also get the problem with downloaded AVI's, then they have never seen Movie Factory. But them again many members have reported sync problems with Movie Factory 2/3. Sync problems in capturing is normally due to dropped frames, either HD is not defragged, or slow, or CPU is slow, etc. I use Ulead Video Studio 7 for my Capturing (I dont use it for editing or authoring or burning, just Capturing) to AVI then use DVD2SVCD w/CCE to convert to a set of VOB files. Its has been years since I have ever had a sync problem personally.

What Codec's have you installed ? If your install any Codec Paks, I would strongly suggest un-installing them as they cause all sorts of conflicts, including a/v sync probs on some systems. Just install latest DivX, Xvid and an AC3 codec and it will play/decode 99% of AVI's out there.

I don't have any problems capturing. It's only in the conversion/authoring process.

I just recently installed the DivX player/codec...other than that, The only ones I've actually installed would be ones that are included with any software I've installed. I have installed codec packs before, but have already uninsatlled all of them.

Here's a list of all the codecs listed in my System Information
