Hot Insertion: Mouse on PS2

Thanks 4 reading.

Probably a silly question but needed your feedback anyway. If you have switched on your laptop, is it okay to plug in the mouse to the PS2 connection? I know USB is hot insertion but not sure about PS2 connections.

I'd say NO - pretty sure that's what Windows tells you if it can't find a mouse.
Serial - normally yes, I believe, as well as USB.

One problem, apparently, with PS/2 is that there is rather a lot of power available from that port - not subject to sequencing control like USB

Thanks for the answer.

I know I've unplugged a PS2 mouse before with the laptop powered up, by mistake of course! with no adverse effects but wasn't sure about plugging it in. Yeah I thought windows would not see it if I plugged it in after powering up but didn't want to take the risk....

...Thanks again.

Message received loud and clear.....thanx guys.

Okay, what about PCMCIA cards. I know you can 'stop' them and unplug but what about plugging in when the power is on? Same answer I guess, "don't do it!!"...just checking though.

Cheers Seb....

It was as I thought.

The only devices I hot insert are USB (don't have any F/wire) but I just thought I would double check for the other stuff. Just busy sorting out a laptop, installing apps and the like, as it's a gift for a family member and I wanted to give them the correct info as regards plugging stuff in. I always power down before plugging in but just wanted to make sure.

Thanks again to everyone that helped me out.

Even with USBs devices (esp memory sticks), get the good habit to 'stop' them b4 unplugging.

Regarding to the PCMCIA, there are certain PCMCIAs which u can hotplug (e.g. modem)
but others (eg HD) are a NO NO.
But i won't recommend hotplug for ANY PCMCIA
