Ho do I Covert...

Hi all,

Just a quick question...

How do I convert the .dat file from a VCD to .avi file ?

I would like to do this so I can put a VCD on 1 disc and have it in avi format.

Cheers....:)

Well, the first thing is to isobust the dat file to your hdd (select filter only mpeg frames) name the file u r saving .mpg.
I'll have to leave it to someone else to explain the divx bit as I'm going to sleep now!!

now you can use VCDgear or ISO buster to extract the mpeg out of the dat if you want, though personally I would do it straight from the VCD disc & not put the dat file on the HDD.
I found sometimes just copying the dat file to HDD will give me these strange funny lines across the bottom of the vcd after converting the dat into mpeg, but they were gone when I did it straight from the CD (could have been a glitch on my old PC, but hasn't failed me from cd to mpeg).
After that you can use your fav converter/encoder for making a divx out of the mpeg.

Yes, always best to extract the DAT file to MPG file directly from the CD with Isobuster (or VCDGear) but if its on your HD and it plays okay, then convert the same to mpg.

Play the MPG file with WMP or WinDVD to make sure its ok.

Load MPG file into VirtualDUB, set Video to Full Processing Mode and select Compression and from that window selct DivX Low Motion (for DivX 3.11) or DivX 5.x. Configure them to a bit rate of 800. Now go to Audio Tab and set to Full compression mode, select Compression and and select MP3 and 96kbps, 44.1khz , Stereo. Now go to Fle and select SAVE AS AVI. Sit back and watch the DivX being encoded.

how can you rename the dat file to mpg on the CD Screaminghelll?
You would still have to put it on the HDD, & unfortunately it doesn't always copy well from CD to HDD (dat-> HDD). That's why it is best to use the ISObuster/VCDgear to extract with instead.
But I guess worth a try first to see if it works, if not good, then use the software.

The rename thing can work but you somtimes get little errors.
Better to spend the extra 2 mins with isobuster to make sure.

Do you have to extract also the MPGs from a SVCD as you do with VCD DAT files or they don't need the process and I can just copy them as they are to the hard disk?
Can VCDGear do the work also for MPEG2 files in SVCD if the process is needed?

Thanks a lor m8s!

SVCD's have a riff header same as VCD's. If you just copy either then it will still have the header. VirtualDub should open it fine with a header anyway though.

Full processing mode will force a RGB24 conversion so I wouldn't suggest using it. That said VCD's as a general rule are 4:3 where as your AVI would be 1:1 so you really should resize it, also crop it if it has black bars. If you wanted to do this without the RGB24 conversion then you would need to frameserve the mpg to VirtualDub using AVISynth.

As for setting the bitrate to 800, I would suggest that you do two passes and set the bitrate based on the length of the movie so that it fits perfectly on 1 CD.

Also AVI now supports AAC/HE AAC which is what I would recommend for such a low bitrate. You would need to encode your audio to HE AAC seperatly with Nero, encode your video with VDub and then mux the two with AVIMuxGUI.

Thanks m8s.

I ahve tried VCDGear wxtracting the MPG from the BIB/CUE image that I have had. The file appeared to be ok but after that I could not mount the file anymore in Alcohol virtual drive. It appears that vcdgear screwed it up in some way. I could access it after mounting it in the V-drive and reading it trough Isobuster, but before that I could not access the image (just mount it).
