High data rate MPEG-2 to SVCD...

Hey, folks!... I've got a dilemma I'm hoping someone here might help me solve...

I've got a high data rate DVD MPEG-2 file (12 MB/s) that I'd like to convert to SVCD for eventual stand-alone DVD player playback... What utility do folks recommend using for converting such a large MPEG-2 file to SVCD (so it fits onto a CD)?...

I might mention that my MPEG-2 file is generated from a Hauppauge WinTV-350 MPEG-2 video capture card. I have tried using the usually tried-and-true TMPGEnc Plus to convert the file, but there must be something about Hauppauge's MPEG-2 codec that might be slightly out of standard that it crashes TMPGEnc Plus when I try to import a MPEG-2 file.

Thanks again for all your input!... I really appreciate it!...

Still need a little help...

Just follow the DVD to SVCD Tutorial http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=7755

It uses DVD2SVCD with CCE to give you the best quality possible as a SVCD.

Thanks for the quick reply, ChickenMan... I checked out the tutorial, and looked pretty informative... But I still need a bit more hand-holding here, in that I have an existing MPEG-2 file (not one that is or needs to be ripped from a DVD). I don't see in the tutorial (or in DVD2SVCD's interface) where I would choose a MPEG-2 file instead of a DVD's IFO file for SVCD conversion...

Thanks again for your help!...

Sorry, my confussion.

Just rename the *.mpg file to VTS_01_1.vob and copy a VTS_01_1.IFO file off a DVD to the same filder and load it itto DVD2SVCD. Ignore the movie length (as thats read from the IFO but is NOT used in any calculations)

One more thing...

Thanks again for the reply, ChickenMan!...

I've got one more question: How would I specify the data rate I want for the SVCD? I see there is the tab for determining the data rate for a particular target CD size, but how do I specify what I want that data rate to be for my output SVCD?...

Thanks again!..

You dont, it does it automatically, thats the whole point of using DVD2SVCD, it maximize the bitrate to just file the cd's. All you do is set the number of CD's you want it fit onto for that particular length (in hours/min) of movie, be it 1, 2 or 3 or more (2 or 3 is normal for most movies). This is set in the Bitrate Tab. Then in the extreme right column it tells you approx the bitrate that will be used.
