Help: TMPGenc freezes/crashes computer

I have been using Chicken Man's tutorials for a while now and making VCD and SVCD's. Lately, when I get to the encoding part with TMPGenc it seems to start fine but it never completes. It just stops and then my mouse is frozen. Anyone have any suggestions /settings I need to change to make this program run to completion?

Thanks,

Sorry, seemed to have missed your post.

Is the imput a DVD or an AVI?

If DVD then make sure you shut down Windows & re-boot the computer, dont run any other programs before you get the encoding started.

If AVI, then same as above but probably a problem with the AVI, even though it seams to play okay. Rip the audio track out with Virtualdub and use the avi for video source and new audio track as audio source in TMPGEnc.

For those having similar problems, here are a couple of things I did. I am not sure which ones helped, but my problem went away. First of all, after I ripped the DVD to my hard drive, I ran defrag. I quit overclocking my CPU and also I turned off my anti-virus program. Hope this info helps others.

Quit overclocking your CPU is probably the problem. Encoding puts the CPU into 100% utilization and overclocked tend to push the CPU to far and finally fails. Okay for normal day to day stuff though.

First of all, you guys rock in the help department. It's nice to see a helpful board like this one.

That said...on to my problem :D

This pretty well sums up my problem except the only thing frozen is tmpge. The time elaspsed in tmpge is still reading properly (is not frozen) but as far as the conversion, nothing is happening. This 'freeze' happens at around the 70% mark consistantly with more than one movie (3 so far).

I've been doing this for about 6 months and this has only been happening in the last month. I have even gone so far as to boot windows into safe mode and run tmpge there (was that a good idea?)

Computer is a intel Pentium II 400 w/ 128 RAM running win98, I have not overclocked my processor.

Thanks,
Rob

Your problem Rob lies with your CPU. A P400 is below what TMPGenc recommends ( a P3 500 min) so expect anything to happen. I think its time to upgrade m8.

Would I have not had these problems from the start if the computer was just too slow. Like I said the whole process worked fine for about 6 months and now it freezes.

Or....is it just a crap shoot and I got lucky for the first 6 months.

Anyway, I do agree with you about the upgrade and it'll go on the list of wants unfortunatly and not the list of needs :)

Just the way it is I guess.

My system can run for weeks and not crash once but then decide to crash 4 times in one day. Same when it comes to making Vcd's.
I can make 3 or 4 movies one after the other with no problems at all but then I can have the same movie lock up my system time after time. My system more than meets the min' spec's for making Vcd's but I just accept that sometimes it locks up.

....DreeM :)

Rob, I'm sure you have installed some software in the last 6 months and most seam to have some part of it running in the background lowering your available memory. These things also affect the stability of your system. Remember, when encoding your CPU is running at 100% and any small glitch in your system will soon bring it undone.

I know that I need an upgrade for TMPGE to work more reliably but the movie I have been trying to convert finally worked last night.

I had uninstalled the NIMO codec pack and reinstalled it with just the basic installation. I don't know whether it helped or I just got lucky.

Is there any other multi codec packs out there that are better that the Nimo one?
