Help the newbie

Hi I just recently brought a dvd writer and wanted to back up my DVDs , however I have downloaded dvd decrypter and other various utilities , but am confused about putting it back together!

I managed once but popped it in the dvd player , got a root menu with loads of avi files.when i watched them thje sound just dissapeared a third of the way through!

How do i get rid of css protection or whatever its called and burn on to a dvd so that it plays with no problem on my normal dvd player??????

Please please help the newbie...
