HELP!! System hangs when using DVDR

Hi guys

I have a Liteon 811s and liteon 401s and have just starting having the problem of my system hangs when i trying to use them.
It hangs if i try to make an image or when i 'try on the fly'
I have tried using Nero 6 Ultra and Alcohol 120, both of which come up with the same problem???

I have updated the Firmware of the 2 drives to the latest.

I have no other programs running in the back ground either.

This has just started happening in the last day or 2 .

I have tried reinstalling my burning software, but this didnt help.

Any ideas guys?????

Thanx i advance

kill your current ASPI layer by using "ForceASPI 1.7" 's option KillASPI;

Which Chipset is on your motherboard? download and install the latest chipset / IDE controller drivers from your motherboard fabricator's homepage;

How did you connect your drives to your motherboard? Controller, channel, wire?

PIO, DMA or UDMA is activated?

thanx for your time mate

I sorted the problem ( fingers crossed ) :)

I Found that there was an updated firmware, so i installed that, but that didnt work.
Anyway...... it was the liteon 401s that was at fault. So i replaced it with a combi i had lieing around, and all seem ok.

On updating the firmware though, i found that i had access to burning certain discs ( Ritek ) at 8 speed.
When i used this option it stated in Nero and Alcohol That the disc would be written in say 8 minutes, and it did show that 100% was achieved in 8 Minutes, but the progress counter/bar did not show that the disk was written at the same speed and takes about another 6-7 Minutes to finish, which really means that it takes the same time to burn at X8 as it would at X4
Any Ideas???

I have the Writer set as Pri. Slave and the reader at Sec.Slave.

I know this sounds a really newb question, but what shoud i set the settings to RE: UDMA etc, and where do i go to change them??
I thought that it was in device manager>select device>properties, but i cant see this option in Win XP

Thanx again

si

In WinXP, the device mode setting has moved to the controller properties, and is now more than just a check-box for DMA.

In general, modern Optical drives are likely to be capable of UDMA 2 (ATA/33) - the highest mode that does not require an 80 wire cable.
Older optical drives may be limited to PIO4/DMA MW2, and my first drive was PIO3/DMA MW1.

In general, use the highest mode available - though I found better stability when a UDMA2 mode drive sharing with a MW2 mode drive was reduced to UDMA-0.

What's UDMA-0 ? - same 16Mb/s speed as PIO4/MW2, but with the checksumming of UDMA

UDMA4 is ATA/66, and UDMA5 seems to cover both ATA/100 and ATA/133 - as yet, you'll only see these speeds on hard drives.
