help pls

hi all firstly very nice forum ;)
new to all this just dowloaded a film when i try to open it in media player /divx player alpha 2.0 ( with the latest codec) says its not a recognised format .
its an avi file thats 726 mb (so with the size i think its actually mpeg) is there any s/w that will read the file to tell me what it is pls ?
thanks in advance

ps:
if this is in the wrong forum i'm sorry thought this would be the best place to post it

It would make it much more easier if you told us where you downloaded it (forumpost) and what movie it is that you downloaded. Probably there are more people who downloaded it, and can tell you what you need for it (eg. rename to mpeg or something like that)

Good luck, LIQUIDATOR

At 720meg long is is most defenitely NOT an mpg file but a DivX as you originally said.

Load the file into VirtualDUB and/or NanDUB (get both from _www.doom9.net ) and go to File / File Properties and it will give some clues as to whats the problem.

Would also suggest you install DivX codec 3.11a as many DivX are still encoded with this and not always able to be decoded with 5.x I would also suggest you install WinDVD 3 or 4 for your DivX playback.

thanks very much for the reply i'll give what you said a try then let you know how i faired
