Help!! My Comp will No Longer Boot up

Can someone please help me with my problem. All of a sudden when I start up my computer it goes so far then stops and I get a registery error about "not being able to load the registery hive" That it is either corrupt or missing or not able to write too. Then my system just sits there. I don't know how to fix it. Can someone help me with this problem.

I am running XP Pro

Thanks

Bootup with the WindowsXP CD

From the Setup CD-ROM

Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.

When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.

When prompted, type the Administrator password.

At the system prompt, type Recovery Console commands; type help for a list of commands, or help commandname for help on a specific command.
To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit.

Fixboot
Writes a new partition boot sector onto the specified partition.

Fixmbr
Repairs the master boot record of the specified disk....

Thanks jroc! How do I boot up with the xp disc. I put it in then I turn the system on but it seems to bypass the cd rom disc and just tries to boot up normal. Is there a way to get it to boot off my xp disc so I can try to do a repair? Thanks

You might need to look at your BIOS settings to make sure that the first boot device is set as your cd-rom so that it will read your XP Pro cd in order to boot up.

In order to view your BIOS settings restart your computer and hold the Delete key down as your computer restarts.

If you need more help then post again and somebody will be able to help. The problem for me is that I do not know how much you know about the BIOS.

as was mentioned above...you will have to set your bios to boot from cdrom as the first device...or if you have the 4 floppy disk for booting windows from the floppy drive...you can use them.

Well I ended up reformatting my hard drive. It was tough for me because this is the first time I ever had to reformat. The only problem is all my software that was on my system is gone :( Well at least I'm able to use my system again. Now I'll have to get the rest of my hardware back going then I guess I'll work on the software part of it. Thanks again for the help I received!

Another suggestion is keep all files

on another drive (plus back up). if you have an os crash you didnt loose any files.
I just moved my documents to a larger drive D: all office and mp3 default to D: drive now.

I have also found backup to h/d faster and then I copy to cdrw disk. and I back up favorites to txt so I dont have tohunt up links again

when you do your backups use at least an odd and even system. odd days odd disk even days etc. one of my coworkers was using same floppy every day. comp crashed in middle of backup he lost everything.

well, this may be a little teeny wee tiny bit too late, but... :)
isn't there an option to "repair a partition" on the setup CD? I have it on my Win2K disc.
