Hi Everyone, I'm still having problems getting things to work and would appreciate any help you can give. I just reinstalled my laptop so that I could dedicate it to burning. I installed Win XP pro, ran all of the service pack updates, installed quicktime, windows media player 9, microsoft codex, divx 5, xvid, virtual dub, nandub, tmpgenc, tmpgenc dvd author. When I try to open an AVI file in quicktime, virtual dub or tmpgenc I get an error that the microsoft mpeg-4 decompressor could not be found and the file can't be opened. What the heck am I missing here? Any suggestions?

Check the file properties of the AVI with GSPOT and report the results here. Tick the Render button as well, does it render okay?

will do, but it does play in Windows Media Player 9. This is happening with all the avi files I have not just one.

Important thing is the fourCC which in this case looks like MS MPEG4 V1. As for the file working in WMP9, I think you need to read the message again as it explains that. Also means that it should render fine in GSpot.

You could install the MS MPEG4 codecs or ffdshow which now incorperates ffvfw.

If you do go with ffdshow, make sure that it is setup to handle MS MPEG4 v1.
