Help me with ASUS DRW-0402P/D and XP Pro

I have an NVIDIA chipset ASUS A7N8X motherboard with an AMD2400+ processor, 512M RAM. It worked correctly with a DVD player as secondary master and a CD burner as primary slave. Now I replaced the DVD player with an ASUS DRW-0402P/D DVD/CD burner combo drive. It must be able to burn DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW. So now I have two burners in the computer.

With this burner I can burn TDK+R discs with Nero 5.5.10.20 but not TDK DVD+RW 1-4x discs. (I did not yet tried any other brand.) For the latter type Nero says 'invalid media'. DVD+R discs I can burn and the discs verify OK, but I cannot read them under XP. It is even stranger that until I put a disc in the drive windows explorer recognizes the drive as a DVD-R drive, but as soon as I put in the disc just burnt this changes to CD-ROM Drive. Linux on the same machine reads the same disc without any problems!

I have tried the Asus RecordNow DX software bundled with the drive to write the +RW discs. That software does not complain and burns to about 30-40% then slows down the computer to almost a halt. Even the mouse stops moving for minutes.

The device manager lists the burner under DVD/CD-ROM Drives by its name. In properties I see that device type is DVD/CD-ROM Drives, Manufacturer: [standard CD-ROM drives] (!) and says that the device is working properly.

I tried to find any information about such a problem, but could not find any. Please help me if you can!

Thanks,
Andreas

connect your DVDRW via 40-wire ATAPI/IDE cable, master is correct;
nForce2 boards are problematic in burning stuff; go to nVIDIA's homepage, download and install the latest IDE busmaster drivers (included in the nForce package); enable DMA for the drive;
if these drivers won't work use Windows' standard IDE busmaster driver instead;
