HELP me please I'm desparate

Somebody please help me!!!

I just upgraded my Motherboard and CPU (the motherboard is a FIC AN11 Stealth and the CPU is an AMD Athlon 2000+) I have 512 mb of DDR memory. Everything was fine untill I attempted to hook up my flat bed scanner. The computer froze without an error message. The only thing that I could do was to hit the reset switch. I then got an error that stated "Error loading kernel. You must reinstall windows." Well I change the old kernel32.dll to kernel32.old and reinstalled another kernel32.dll. Now I have the message, "EMM386 has detected error #01 in application at memory address 2ADA:2AFE. to minimize the chance of data loss, EMM386 has halted your computer."

This is happening while the computer is booting. What can I do. I would like to save the information on the hard drive. If I can atleast get it to be a slave, I could transfer the files I need. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help me ASAP.

Thanks
John

Thanks, but now I get the message "Error loading explorer.exe" is there anything else that I can do? can i replace the explorer.exe with a new one?

Insert Windows CD - boot from CD and Fix windows installation. When it asks you if you want to fix it or do clean install choose Fix installation. If that doesn't help then you need to reinstall completely. It seems you've been messing with your OS quite a lot.

Not really, just for this problem. I know just enough to be dangerous. I been using a computer friend, he's out of town for the holidays. I'll try your suggestion though. thanks

Don't know if any will help...that's the only thing i can think of right now. If you make restore points then just try to boot to safe mode and restore it.

I'm running windows 98se, no restore points:eek:(
I attempted to boot from the cd but now it says that the hard drive no longer has a valid Fat or Fat32 partition. Can I repartition the drive without loosing the information?
I intend to retrieve the information and then re-format and clean install. It's just REAL important I get those files.

The only way you can reparition without loosing your data is to use for example Partition Magic which means you'd need to be able to boot to windows and since you cannot...i don't think you can do anything else since if you use FDISK you will loose all your data. I am not sure if there is any proggy which you can use in dos to partition drive without loosing data. Do a search on google.

Runch Ckdisk...diagnostic for your HD..don't know what else. I thought you used XP. :( I am not sure but I think that's about it you can do. Wait for a little longer to see if some hardware guru will reply and maybe he'll have some more suggestions. There is not much you can do from DOS to backup your data...only copy to another drive if you have two drives or if you have second partition. If you only have one partition and dos cannot recognize it...i am afraid there is nothing but else to do but start from scratch.

thanks again, but you gave me an Idea. What if I created a second partition on the hard drive and copied the information to it.

One problem that I just discovered is when I check my partition it says that it is a NON-DOS partition. Do you or anyone else know if I can move information from a non-dos to a primary dos partition?

So, the question still remains. Can I change the NON-DOS partition into a Fat32 partition without losing my information? Please, If anyone can help!!

Boot from a boot floppy. Use P@rtitonM@gic (attached) and try to check and fix the damaged partition. If that does not work, you may have a loose IDE drive cable, drive going bad, or a bad boot sector virus (have been known to come even on a manufacturer's driver disks - like for your scanner. When this happened to me, I began to backup all my important stuff. Hope this helps!

This may help...read the info with file attached!!

GetDataBack for FAT is a sophisticated data recovery software, which will help
you to get your data back when one or all of the following is corrupt or lost

- Partition Tables
- Boot Records
- FATs
- Root Directory

when

- a virus has hit the drive
- files were deleted
- the drive was formatted or fdisk' ed,
- the drive was struck by a power failure.

GetDataBack can even recover your data when

- the drive is no longer recognized by the operating system
- not only the root directory, but all directory information is lost.

Advanced algorithms will make sure that all directories and sub directories
are put together as they were, and that long file names are reconstructed
correctly.

GetDataBack is safe, because it' s read-only, which means the program will
never attempt to write to the drive you are about to recover.

The software enables the regular user to conduct his own data recovery by
guiding him through five easy to understand steps, thus gives the advanced
user the possibility to interfere with the recovery and improve the results,
by examining the scan log, the file system details, file and directory
information, by selecting the sector range to be scanned, by choosing
excessive search for file systems or search for lost files, by calling
Runtime's DiskExplorer.

GetDataBack recovers data from

- Hard Drives
- Partitions
- Floppy Drives
- Drive Images
- Zip/Jaz Drives
