help - many files taking forever

Hello everyone

My first post here. I purchased a Sony firewire DVD burner a few days ago. I have a decent laptop with Win XP on it.

I have about 300 various types of video files on my computer (mpg, avi, real, asf) that I would like to burn on DVD for watching on my TV. I downloaded Nero 6 ultimate and created a new project. Added about 15 videos to the project, created the menus and started the process. It was late so after an hour I went to bed. Got up this morning and it was still processing and said there were 21 hours left. That's crazy. There has got to be a better way. So, I started searching forums and it seems like there is no easy way to accomplish what I want to do. Every file type takes different apps to convert. Any one have suggestions? I would really appreciate it.

I should convert every file first and then use nero to burn them to DVD?
yes, choose the method depending on the file type;
Nero's encoder is worst in quality too;

And it takes forever. Come on, who's going to wait 28 hrs per DVD. That's nuts.
