Help, 106 so slooow !

hi

ive just installed a pioneer 106 in my pc and have been using Laz's tutorial on how to identify and backup a DVD 5 DVD [ A BIG thanks to Laz, i found it a great help].

the 106 is backing up dvd's ok, its just so slow. the read rate is 1,300 kb/s (1.0x) and the buffer does not run when its reading. the write rate is 1,250 (0.9x) the buffer and device buffer run here . im using dvd DVD Decrpter and have done 7 dvd's so far set at different read speeds ie 2x, 4x, max and write speeds 2x and 4x, but the speed settings make no difference.

the films are great copies, but its talking the 106 a hour to read and a hour to write them. my pc know how is very limited. i have searched the forum for related links and have not found anything to help.

im running windows 98se, the 106 is my primary master drive and i think my hard drive is the primary slave drive [ i had a bit of a game installing the 106?].
athlon 1000 processor
128mb of ram
the firmware is - version 1.06
the driver is - microsoft 4-23-1999
dma - box unticked

any help will be greatly appreciated.

I had EXACTLY the same problem, I have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that the drive is locked to only rip DVD's at x2 Speed, with a simple firmware hack it is possible to max this out at x12.

Now for the bad news, I cannot for the life of me remember where I downloaded it...

You are actually ripping quite FAST, given your puter specs- especially the 256 RAM thing.

U really need faster processor & at least twice the ram to improve things!!

Just a couple of tips:
1. 98 is certainly not good for intensive stuff like video processing.
2. Having DMA ticked off means using PIO mode 4, which normally sums up to processing speeds around 650 k/sec- yours 1,300K is "almost" miraculous...

Get the 1.07 firmware which increases rip speed and region free.
I've updated mine with it and it's made a world of difference.

As ever flashing firmware can be unpredictable, so do this at your own risk.

the first thing i did when i got my A06 today was update the firmware, and the 1 dvd i have tried was VERY VERY slow. I dont know what this is, is it software?

just thought i would let you know how i got on.
i've updated the firmware to version 1.07 [ which was not as scary as i thought] and i ticked the MDA boxes in the properties of my dvd writer and hard drive. the 106 now starts reading at 2.7x and speeds up to 5.7x at the end [approx 15 mins to read] it now writes at 4.1x [approx 14 mins to write] i also adjusted dvd decrypter, tools,settings,I/O and ticked ignore read errors [ i had a bad burn before altering dvddecrypter]
touch wood i have not had any problems since.

is this everything you have done?

I ask because i have had the same problems. I just put my 106 as the master, maybe this will help. What kind of media did you use to write at 4x?

I got my pioneer 106D 2 weeks ago with firmware 1.05. It reads @2.1X but can write up to 4X. I use Memorex DVD+R 4x. My specs are p4 2.4 ghz, 512 ddr ram. Will install back my dvd rom just for reading and my writer just for burning.

Wise choice! Although I have used my A06 to extract, I have found my LiteOn 166S DVD-Rom to be a much better choice to extract. Not only is it faster, but while this drive is cooling my A06 is burning. This way neither drive is too hot, thus shortening its life.

The wise choice is certainly using a DVD-ROM to rip, but as my puter is maxed I have to use my Sony DRU-500 to rip AND burn.
Ripping speeds are not impressive at all, much worse than any decent DVD-ROM out there, but at least they are consistent, and the rips are just fine and working.
