HD problems ....... converted fat 32 drives over to NTFS now having RAW probs :(

recently swapped over to WIN XP pro and converted an existing drive over to NTFS from FAT32 and now one partition is unreadable or RAW ive read various articles that this drive is recoverable or at least the data on it ?!?

BUT...... HOW ?!

or is there even a way of restoring it to NTFS data intact ?!

or is it simply a FORMAT of that partition and loose everything !?

i would like to recover some files if not ALL if possible ...not bothered about system files on there just some stored files :)

thanks in advance :)

no roady i used the command line in a dos window using the "convert" command :)

thanks for the list of tools PC-GUY :)

will have a look with them :)

just says local disk (partioned its in position f: ) is inacessable :(

tried both of the above commands and its still not accessable :(

arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh format lol ;)

lol the dreaded word lol will try recover some stuff first then go for the format :)

hopefully it should be ok after formatting :)

not what i wanted to do but .....you cant win em all :)

thanks for your advice roady :)

If those partitions are large then this is natural- "convert X:FS:NTFS" always amounts to clustersize of 512 bytes, which is unusable for large partitions (and slow as a snail, as well). Use any good partition manager (I recommend Partition Commander) to change the clustersize to 4K or maybe 8K for very large partitions.

Both programs I mentioned will keep your data while formatting,bud....;)

PS:if you give PM a try, don't forget to disable SMART in your bios!

It's only con is that it is more complex than FAT32, and that's all... everything else is a plus: Native indexing, file encryption, and journaling (automatic data recovery in a case of a failure or system crash)- plus of course no filesize or partition size limitations. Since data accessibility is not an issue (every schoolboy can get PE builder and make a WinPE bootCD...), I don't see any good reason for using FAT32 on single-OS NT/2000/XP systems.

maybe Winternals Disk Commander as part of the Admin Pack would be an option for recovering data;

THANKS EVERYONE i used GETDATA BACK and recovered 99% of data :D
the other 1% was system files which can be replaced with a reinstall :)

RE- formatted the partitions and they are now readable/usable once more :)

I guess thats the probs u get if you try convert a FAT32 drive to NTFS with DATA on the drive :(

Sooooooooooooo from this EXPERIENCE i would ADVISE format the drive/partition from scratch to NTFS if you don't want to have the hassle of recovering later :)
