hard disk problem?

I'm having a problem installing Win98 on a hard disk that has no problem with Win2k.

Scandisk (W98) reports a problem, but what does it mean??

"Scandisk can not read from last cluster on drive D. It's damaged, or the system is not working properly. Drive D may need to have Logical Block Addressing enabled to work properly, or its disk partition may be incorrectly marked as a non LBA-partition."

I read somewhere that this may have been caused by resizing the partitions with Partition Magic, which I did.

How can this be fixed?

Have U tried Usin FDisk on the drive?

Yep it trickier than PM, but it does the job

Failin that the drive might just be on it's way out

Partition Magic makes normally noncompliant partition tables- which may be not gobbled properly by Win98.
Use fdisk/mbr etc. from a W98 bootdisk, as bannzi suggested.

Yep i agree scarecrow

Here's a link 2 a site that gives a walkthrough on usin Fdisk http://fdisk.radified.com/

The /mbr switch will rewrite the master boot record, use that switch first then just follow the walkthrough

Then use Fdisk 2 delete the partitions if they exist & then create a new 1 & make it active

PS i wouldn't try 2 partition Ur drive up if U have never used this tool b4

Remember after creating then new drive, U will have 2 restart the PC usin the bootdisk again & then Use Format (ie format c: ) 2 format the drive

Let us know how U get on BVV:)

Hope It Helps

PPS if format keeps stoppin & sayin that it has encountered bad sectors & it can't fix them, then U might need 2 get a new drive

If there's nothing in THAT partition, you may be able to delete it and recreate it with FDISK, without removing anything else

It took a long time, but everything is back to normal again.
Thanks guys, especially Banzibaby. I couldn't have done it without the link to the Radified site.

I forgot there was a folder on that drive containg all mp3's I downloaded since january. :-(
Never mind. It gives me something to do. :)

Glad U got it sorted BVV:)

Yep i made the same mistake so many times, there is always somethin i forget 2 back up & I lost count of the number of times i lost mp3s 2:(

Anytime Bud:)

Next time you can use an advanced fdisk variation, which is named aefdisk
It's shareware, but the limitations of the unregistered version are not so significant. It does all that fdisk does plus a lot more- great utility.
