can anyone recommend a hard disc formatter for an ibm hard drive please....freeware would be a bonus but not essential.......thanx

usually you can download such "low level" formater for free at the drive fabricators homepage;

After the "IBM Deathstar" fiasco, they eventually sold out that side of the business to:
www.hgst.com - Hitachi Global Storage Technologies

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm - The "Drive Fitness" tool is probably what you need.

It is not generally possible to actually "low level" format an IDE, as the factory formatting is not accessible to user programs - the most that can normally be done is a zero-fill, and a re-analyze of any bad sectors, in some cases revectoring them to spare sectors - not sure that it's implemented yet on these.

i had to dos tool that came with a motherboard cd to low level format
On older IDE drives, that could damage the factory format, losing speed optimizations such as head and cylinder stagger.

Modern IDE drives will normally either ignore an older BIOS/DOS low level format, or perform a "mid-level" format, such as a zero fill
