Good tool to split AVI files?

Hello all,

I've been using Nandub to split AVI files until now. But yesterday, I finally realized that it's not accurate and I loose between half a second and one second of movie at the splitting point. I didn't realize until now because splitting did not occur at an important moment in the movie (no speech, a change in the camera point of view) for the few ones that I've burned on 2 CDs.

Yesterday, when I realized that, I was quite sad, though.
Searching on some forums, it seems that AviSplitCalc is a good tool that uses Nandub and configures it well enough to have a clean split. Indeed, it worked on the movie I was working with yesterday.

However, I would like to ask your opinion. Did you find a good tool? What is the one you prefer/think that it's the best?

Thanks a lot!

I either use nandub or virtual dub. You kinda have to take a little guesswork (as you mentioned a couple of seconds here and there are cut ahead or behind).
The reason they cut this way, is that they actually reads the keymarks (and sound) in the avi file (so you actually get a cleaner cut) as oppsosed to software that just splits it anytime/any second you choose. This can lead to some reading erros (though minimal at that).
Nonetheless there are many (AviChop is another) file splitters to choose from, so just have to see which you prefer.

I've always used VirtualDUB for my cutting. But I would normally make a 5-6 second overlap of the 2 parts anyway so not to miss any action changing disks over. So that way I never miss anything anyway.

Thanks a lot!

My thanks to you, Phantom and Chickenman :)

You are right, Chickenman, for the overlap. The problem is that I like the idea to be able to join the two files I obtained from teh split later to have the equivalent of my original single file (let's imagine I finally have a DVD burner, and I can burn several movies on it :) ). Then it becomes a bit harder to get that file, I think?

Yes agree if you intend on getting a DVDR burner one day, that makes sence.

As shadoe_phantom said, there are many avi cutting tools out there to try, good remorts have been had with AVIChop. Give it a try.
