General Questions about CD Recording

I have several questions about some functions, not only of my burner (which is Nero) but general issues.

1. I've experienced some problems with long filenames. Sometimes I'm forced by the software to cut some letters... Why is that? What's the best configuration for this to work properly?

2. How I record CD-RW? I can't do it right, I think I lost about a dozen discs...

3. I lost also some disc (and their contents) when changing stuff (names, order, erase and add files) in a later session with a CD-R already recorded in multisession...

thanks

1. The safest way round, is to archive the files in a ZIP/RAR or something, and then save the archive to CD - this gets eround TWO aggravations often noted - long file names, and the files copied back from CD come back as READ-ONLY. There are various programs which make a better job of preserving long names, by using less common methods - not so sure that BURNATONCE doesn't have something ... search the forum and you'll find plenty on burnatonce.

2. Choose the right media for your drive - old drives generally need 1-4x, more recent drives with a 10 or 12 rated RW speed can use "highspeed" media - and may also be compatible with lower speed media (some drives do it, and some do it VERY badly) - next step up is Ultra speed.

Media - drive incompatibility with brands of RW media is far more common than with CD-R ... few people have a good word for MEMOREX CD-RW media in ANY drive (I've been bitten TWICE - the ols 1-4x wouldn't work in my old drive, but worked ok in the HS compatible new drive - so I bought a pack of their HS ... should have known better!)

3. If you failed to import the previous session, it doesn't get added. This can happen if the software settings are wrong, or if you did not present the CD-R when it wanted to import.

If your main burner program has "Session Selector" or "Multimounter" features (possibly on a right-click of the drive letter), then access to previous sessions is easy - otherwise you need extra software, or to copy the contents of the current session from the CD (to a temporary directory) - and then rewrite it, choosing to import the session before last - this is also software dependent - quite easy in NERO, not sure how you'd do it in other burning programs.
