Gates gives $100m to fight HIV, $421m to fight Linux (The Register)

We do hate to rain on a high-profile corporate love-fest, but we have to point out that in addition to the much trumpeted $100 million Bill has donated to India's fight against HIV, he's funding the Microsoft jihad against Linux to the far more impressive tune of $421 million. That means that Linux is more than four times worse than AIDS to Bill and his happy Redmond family. God forbid any of them should learn the bitter truth the hard way and start talking sense.

Bill's personal $100 million goes to health initiatives over ten years, while $421 million of Microsoft's money goes, over a mere three years, to support MS-friendly development and 'educational' initiatives. And being a monster MS shareholder himself, a 'Big Win' in India will enrich him personally, perhaps well in excess of the $100 million he's donating to the AIDS problem. Makes you wonder who the real beneficiary of charity is here.

Oh, and let's not forget the five, count 'em, five, vanity puff-pieces appearing in the New York Times this week glorifying Bill's generosity, one of which he wrote himself. That's worth quite a lot too, in PR brownie points for both him and his company. It's far better than free advertising; it actually looks like news and therefore has immensely more persuasive value.

Interestingly, the NYT neglected to mention the gargantuan MS marketing tie-in and obvious bribe against, and obstacle to, Linux adoption in India. Certainly they've been falling all over Gates in their eagerness to give him ink, so we're at a terrible loss to explain why they could find no place, among those thousands of words, to plug in a brief mention of the $421 million in anti-Linux ammo he's delivering.------ Hey at least bill's got his priorities right, lol.

Not to worry - you can rest assured that many Indian users will follow the trend seen in the rest of Asia, where using M$ software will cost them little, if anything, more than using Linux...

That eye-opening comparison against his AIDs donation does leave Gates (quite rightly) with egg on his face, though. What a w@nk3R!

At first glance, it seems to be a nice gesture but when you
start putting things in perspective that's when the whole
game plan becomes as clear as crystal.
Where does human values and truth figure in all this?
Is parading charity not obscene or have we become so
numb as to not recognize it?

And as for Linux , it is becoming very user friendly so it's growth
toward the home desktop market is steadily growing.

In any case most business already have or are in the process
of switching over to Linux in India.

That may explain his desperation since most others in asia may
follow suit not only because of the cost but also because of
security, opennes and stability assured by an operating system
which is open source , free from corporate sin and overall just
a great piece of work resulting from the combined efforts of
a lot of noble people.

In the bews a couple of days ago, the Japanese Government were reported to be considering dumping their M$ software to use something else, although just what this alternative might be, has yet to be said. Apparently, the Japanese Govt are keen to drop M$ because of the increased security risk inherent in this, the most popular software.

Also the chinese government uses their own system (a unix derivative), because they are afraid that Billy would spy at them and report everything he finds out to Pentagon.
On the other hand, the US institutions use MS software (ever wondered why there are no easter eggs in winxp? that's because the US government doesn't use software which contains undocumented code due to security issues)

boy oh boy

Gates LOOKED wrrried with that. Why India? They do need it but not as much as POOR countries with nothing going.

DONATE (write off) but keep profits from falling?

Stupid does as stupid is. I quit doing PERIOD!

Let me get this straight:

Y'all are complaining someone GAVE 100 million dollars away. Simply amazing. I think you all just have to find something to bash Gates about.

It's HIS money. Who are y'all to tell him what he should do with it?
