fried power supply

hi all

have been given a friends comp he says wont switch on
discovered power supply fried
tried taking psu out of another comp but still wont switch on ie dead as a dodo

my question is this is the fried psu likeky to have stuffed the mobo

the temp psu has been put back in the other comp and is fine
as to the cause of fried psu he had it under a desk with no ventilation so am sure that was what started the problem

any input greatfully received

One word - sounds expensive.

I was lucky, my PSU cooked when the fan failed, but both motherboard and PSU survived.

I guess the motherboard or CPU may have succumbed also, possibly the RAM.

The other danger, is that any of those parts, may be harmful to others - If the motherboard voltage regulators are damaged, it could destroy a replacement CPU.

And if the CPU is damaged, it may short out - though a decent motherboard should have limiting in the regulators - but remember, the "take the heatsink off" test from Toms hardware, resulted in dead motherboard as well for the AMD CPU - so a motherboard is not immune to CPu trauma.

The RAM, is also suspect, as are any cards - use the cheapest possible donor components and machine when testing., as you may destroy something else before faultfinding is over!

Could be a fried Processor or RAM as well. You need to stress to your friend the importance of proper ventillation..... but then again mabey he gets it now ;)

There is no easy way to check which item is fried, so take it to a trusted computer technician and have them check it out. Just have them do a diagnostic which is usually inexpensive. The only other way is hot swapping parts which is a pain and a little risky if you don't know what is fried.

just to clarify a couple of things
the cpu is fried im a sparky and know all to well the smell of fried shellac (it stinks)
i was as you point out wondering about what else the psu had taken with it

just for everyones future knowledge my mate had this problem for a while comp would crash for no reason but he didnt ask anybody about it (including me) just kept switching it on again

so beware all in future, i think its gonna cost

£11 new h/sink/fan

mind you the old setup was only .5 gig

so he didnt do that bad !!!!
