Forte Agent??

Hey gang....I've been using Agent for a couple of weeks now and I looked into it's programs folder and discovered that the Data folder in it has over 2 gigs worth of DAT and IDX files...I'm trying to clean up my HD and was wondering if i could delete these without ruining the program??...Any help would be appreciated:)

Agent >>>

No man, don't do that or u will f**k up the program.

Those files contain all the headers etc. of your newsgroups.

So, it's your call !!

i should not think that it would as the main installation of the program takes up less than 4 meg :D you dont have to keep all the headers they do need to be flushed occasionally otherwise yer just keeping old headers that have most probably expired long ago !!
so even if it did mess it up a reinstallation is pretty painless 2 gigabytes is pretty large for headers that are just text !
so i would suggest delete them "busto" and if anything goes wrong just reinstall the program which will only take a min or so and downloading the headers is pretty painless too! i use agent myself and clear it out now and then cos its gets messy with old headers etc !:D

Don't **DELETE** them.

Attend to the settings for purging and compacting.

I like to use a LONG setting of 30 days for bodies (read or unread), and "while available" for headers.

I prefer to compact on demand, as it can be a slow operation.

Another wise move - every week / fortnight, switch view to messages with bodies, go though and save or extract the interesting ones and delete the junk (and delete after save), and if most groups use the default group settings, switch the read/no bodies purge to 1 or 2 days, then do a PURGE ALL.
If you also set to compact when "x%" wasted space, this will probably trigger a compaction as well.

The purge clears old stuff, and the Compact actually recovers the wasted space.

Are you downloading ALL bodies on some groups?
That sounds like a MASSIVE buildup, and very slow to get unless you're running broadband!

LTR..I download a lot of stuff from the groups but i've never downloaded a whole group...but after reading your post i went in and readjusted my settings and after purging and compacting i got it down to 50 megs (oh joy!!!) ...Thanks for the help gang

you can delete all files in data folde but DO NOT DELETE these listed

agent
filters
groups
layout
mutex
personal
ranges
urltype
words
xpost

this saves all your setting groups will still be listed and have nothing in them and when you hit get new messages only latest messages get upoaded if you want all messages hit get all messages for this group. do it all the time. I sort the data folder by file names and delete all files above agent. easy quick

You should set Agent to delete the attachments after you SAVED to hard drive, then set the XX days old messages you want to keep (I set to around 5 days), then X% of disk space (I set to 1%) etc. Then make sure to Purge/Compact to gain back the used space.

And, the best way is to use binary downloader like NewsBin Pro or similar for binary which is much stabler, faster than Agent, and it downloads directly to hard drive instead of database so you won't need to Purge/Compact database.
