Files and Folder Tasks Stuck open

This is my first time here. Hope this isn't stupid, but it is a bit strange.

Has anyone ever experienced the Files and Folder Tasks part of the folder you open in Windows Xp staying open? I've tried everything from changing the desktop and folders view to the classic view and all the settings in the desktop properties. It is staying open even on the desktop when there are no folders/windows open. It seems like it made itself part of the desktop and won't close.
