file sort in windows

I don't know what I did but now when saving a downloaded file or using Paint Shop pro or Print Artist, the files are sorted in date order. No matter how I set Windows Explorer the results are the same. While in Explorer the directories and files are sorted correctly by name. I set all the folder to the same and it works correctly in Explorer but not in other applications. Help!!
I am running Windows 98 SE on an IBM Aptiva.

When the "save" or "save as" window appears the files order is the one that you set the last time all you need to do is change to your personal taste at this icon:

I just had a hunch.....
Go to DETAIL view, then click on the heading you want it sorted by - now does that setting stick, even in list view?

I can change it but it won't "stick". The next time I download a file the sort is back in date order. Any other suggestions? It all started when I changed one directory to sort by date.

Have a look in Explorer menu-> View / Folder Options / View tab

Try resetting all folders to their defaults and also unchecking the 'remember each folders settings' option.

Had simlilar problem in Office-97 some time ago and this is what I had to do to resolve it.

Also noticed the problem appeared again after installing DirectX / IE Updates on Win9x PC's.

Short of these things not going - there aren't any policies running on your PC are there?
