File Attributes setting to Read Only (Windows XP )

Hi all,
Just wondering if any1 can help. If I create a new folder, the file
attributes are set to read only by default.
If I remove the checkbox in read only, apply the settings and then re-check
them, its reverted back to read only !
Ive recently re-installed the Winxp os, a few days ago. Never had this problem
before.

Any one know of a quick fix for this, appart from a big hammer.

that is pretty odd . . . does it default to read only for all folder thats you create ?

ty turning of simple file sharing in the folder options - and see if using the more advance file sharing options would help.

Hi, yeah Ive tried that but still no luck. Ive been through the settings dozens of times just incase Ive missed something. Im baffled with this one. I remember reading somewhere that a guy installed sp1 and it change all his files to read only.. cant remeber a fix been mentioned, but Ive not installed the sp1 pack.

hmmmm - ive never had a similar problem before in WXP but i have with WME - though it was down to the comp being infected by the klez worm dont remember which variant

actually your problem - sounds like the effect of the klez worm, maybe you ought to run a virus scan to be on the safe side.

Hi Shadey,

That was suggested by a pal of mine too. But the system is totally clean. My virus programs running 24/7 and kept bang upto date.
Out of curiosity, last night, I formatted the kids computer, and installed 100% fresh install of Win xp, and guess what, yup,,it defaulted straight to read only attribs
