F_Secure 5.31 updating help please

I need some help with F_Secure 5.31 please...................

I am using F_Secure 5.31 with WinXP (thanks dxkim!) and want to update to latest virus definitions version. I have read that it best to do manual updates and not automatic updates. So i went to the F_Secure website and found latest.zip file. How do i update this (just files no installer) ? On the website the .zip version has instructions for Server version. I think im using Workstation. Is there an latest.exe version that does this automatically?

Thanks for info....but this is not manual update, right?! It is just a way to get automatic updates faster, right?! You are still connecting to F_Secure directly.

I read a post by pokopiko and others recommending MANUAL updates if you are using a cracked key....otherwise F_Secure will see your key and log your IP during the update. dxkim gave me the key and said it was cracked key so I want to do manual updates to prevent F_Secure from seeing me.

O.K sorry for the confusion....dxkim just told me the same thing today. Im just suprised that F_Secure doesn't ban this commonly used key. Bytheby....does this key ever expire (ELL0-xxxx.....or U5PU-xxxx.....)????

I must step in here as both I and bigboy are having update problems with F-Secure now.

It seems to be the same update problems in my home system, laptop and bigboy's home system. During the update, it slows and slows then it just freezes. It's been doing this for a week now for me and 2-3 days for bigboy. Anyone else having this problem?

i think the server is just really slow. anyways, u can upgrade manually:

go on f*t.f-secure.com & dl the fsupdate.exe, then run it, they will update for you... no need to worry bout serial or anything for that matter. (fsupdate.exe should be in anti-virus/update or something like that, surf around -=D).

I dont think the update checks for serial either. After doin the manual update, i ran the auto update, it updated fine & say i have the latest updates.

btwn, what is better: pc-cillin or f-secure??

I kind like f-secure.

Same problem here.I also downloaded F-Secure Backweb but it can't connect to the server.It might be a server problem (I hope so).

p0rkus, thanks for the fpt site. It contains a newer virus definition (2002-04-26) than tucows.com

And the virus definition update works just fine. So this is a good alternative...until F-Secure works out their server problem. ;)

Hi. When I read posts in this topic I think there are some info missing for some of you. It seems that a general apprehension is that problems are related to weather the program is legal or not. It could be but in most cases not. The problem in general occur for natural reasons, eg. bad connections etc. Hidden traps and similar is used by some manufactors but still not very common.

Well no to F-Secure. First you have to know what version you use. F-Secure is both Try&Buy and Retail. I don´t have much knowledge of the T&B version. But all T&B has in common that they has to be unlocked in one way or another. The program is accessible for all to try and therefore a regkey/unlock has to be unique for each user. The retail version is always distributed by a reseller and payed for by delivery. The serial in these cases can´t be made personal. Most common it´s on the CD box. And a serial like this can´t be blacklisted. There are often a succession of serials all valid for the same version.
You can´t blacklist all legal users. But as I said..T&B is different.

To me it´s no question what to use. If a program is released both as T&B and Retail I do all I can to get the "Real" version. With some work and knowledge I almost always find someone willing to share.
