External HDD Big Prob

hi guys i need hel;p here i got an external hdd case and then got a hdd to go into it and it is a ide to usb i hook it up to my two laptops and it recognizes the case and the hdd inside it but it will never show me the hdd in the my computer screen it only just sets up the driver for the usb mass storage device and i can seem to access the hdd i was wondering if anyone here could possibly help me

Is the drive already partitioned and formatted?

You MAY need to track down the web site for the IDE case, and see if any XP (I'm assuming WinXP) drivers and utilities are available or required.

check if the drive is recognized in Windows' Drive Management; there you have to assign a drive letter;
hit F1 to find out how to use Windows' Drive Management;
