Expert Needed

Hi, i am a newbie when it comes to the movie scene. I Basically need help and or a tutorial on how to convert my (2-file) .avi (xvid) movie into svcd so i can watch it on my standalone dvd player.
I Viewed the "How to convert your AVI-DivX to SVCD" Tutorial but im unable to use Cinema Craft Encoder since my cpu is a Pent 2 300mhz. So i installed
TMPGEnc 2.58.44.152 Plus (should i use this or something else?, If i can use it how do i configure it etc.)
I also installed the DivX Codec & Xvid Codec and VCDEasy_v1.1.5.2 along with DVD2SVCD 1.1.3 build 2.
Also during the tutorial it mentions Aspect ratio, according to the .nfo the movie is Aspect Ratio: 2.35 and i guess i have to set it manually or something? If so, how would i set it for that aspect ratio?
The info for the avi's is
Video Codec: XViD Video Bitrate: ~922 kbps
Audio Codec: 2ch VBR MP3 Audio Bitrate: ~155kbps 48kHz
Aspect Ratio: 2.35 Resolution: 608x256
Frame Rate: 23.976 fps
-Basically a dvd-rip
Should i stick with the software i have now or should get something else to make this easier for me? Also my Hard Drive is small (3gigs) which leaves me with 1.5gigs to work with at any given time. I was wondering if i can work on the conversion if i burn the avi as a data file on a cd-r and work with it from there which leaves me the 1.5 gigs to set the new converted files. Can this be done? Each avi file is around 695mb's.
Any Help is greatly appreciated & Thank you for your time.

U will get nowhere Until U get faster Processor & a lot bigger hard drive U cant process the files with what U have especially the hard drive

If it NEVER has to uncompress fully - (frameserving from the AVI/Divx decode to the encoder) then you might JUST get by on diskpace (but if it needs to a lot of swapfile as well, you could LOCK UP).

Take a look here at the speeds for a P3 750
Miserable, aren't they, and you'll be doing less than half - and a lot more than a 1 minute test clip

I would say it can be done but hard drive space is essential the bigger the better!!!

On the processor scale ...i have a paltry 500mhz processor and it would take me approx 21 hrs plus maby more to convert a 500 - 600 mb divx :( not the speediest but it would still do it but TAKE MUCH LONGER :(

So with a 300mhz processor it would prolly take a day or so to convert :(

fine if you do not intend to use the computer at the same time :)

but not if you do :(

If you can afford a new puter you can always use yer old one to ask more questions here while the other new one does the conversion :)

TMPGenc also requires a minimum of a 500 Mhz CPU though it has been known to work on slower system, you will just end up with a lockup. As others have said, you need a LOT bigger HD and a faster CPU to do SVCD conversions.

Also, a more meaningful heading to this thread would be welcomed, like one actually associated with your question. Such as "Help needed for AVI to SVCD conversion". Posting in the Movie section would also help where I have just moved it to.

It really take that many hours to convert 500-600MB AVI to SVCD? I have tried twice on my old 350Mhz system and aborted after few hours so never completed one to feel the pain. But with my new AMD 2400 with 1G memory it usually take little over 1 hour to convert 700-800MB AVI to VCD (may take little longer for SVCD but never timed to know for sure).

@Luuve it sure does and i gave up the pain after about 15 hrs of not being able to use the pc for anything else bleh :(

lol

Well hard to say. The size of the AVI is irellivant, only its length matters. You could have a 500-600MB RAW AVI, now that would only be a couple of secs that need converting. On the other hand the AVI could be 2-3hours long.

decompressing 2 svcd is one thing & compressing is another one..compressing takes more time...moreover i'm of the same opinion as celtic....u may have 2 dvd movies of same size but in terms of length, one may be more lengthy thus taking much more time..

DivX AVI to anything is probably about the worst of all, since Divx decoding also adds pain to the CPU.

On a P-II 233, (junkbox machine at computer club), we could NOT play Divx - well, on a 30 FPS clip, it was dropping, stopping, avaerage framerate below TEN.

The length of the AVI (in minutes, not Mb) determines the compression time, and if it was already compressed with a high CPU-demand codec like Divx, that just adds insult to injury!

Also depends if any advanced features like qpel, bframes, etc. were used as these will only increase the amount of processing power required to decode.

Probably little over a year (?) ago, I have tried a small file on my old 350Mhz system and it didn't seem to get to nowhere and I had to abort after 5-6 hours. Now with my AMD 2400 system it takes around 1 hour or little longer for 600-700MB, so I thought I did something wrong then.

Anyway, if yours is that bad then why not upgrade to faster system. It's so cheap now (I didn't upgrade cuz I didn't really need faster system) as I paid around $130 for monboard + CPU (now around $110) and around $45-50 for 512MB PC-2700 (now around $60-70).

I built 3 systems
