EPSON Printing Problems (& FIX)

Just thought I would let everyone of a sneaky thing that Epson have done with there Printers.
They have built something into there Printer that when the ink pad reaches a level inside or a counter reaches a number the Printer stops working.
The Printer comes up with a message saying “Unknown error return to your dealer”. The dealer will then charge you £30+ to (a) put a new ink pad in (b) reset the counter.
They deny this by the way!
This has happened to me BUT
I have now found that you do not need to pay Epson anything at all.
All you have to do is:
(A) Move the colour ink cartridge to the replace position. You can the get at the ink pad with a paper cloth to soak up any ink.
(B) Download this program www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml that will reset your counter.

And hey presto the printer works again fine.
I have got a Epson 580 but I do believe it is the same on other.

More details at:

I hope this help others out there and stops Epson ripping people off.

very interesting !? not had this problem as yet and been using my 580 for about a year or so with dupe cartridges !? with no bother ?!

Another tip here is when the black (aint it always the black?!) or color runs out is to go through the motions of changing the cartridges using the change cartridge in the epson options and just remove and re-insert the cartridges to get a couple more weeks at least out of them (just remember to change them when the ink starts fading again :) )

Anyhow donwloaded this program it still has its uses like the seperate cartridge clean etc :)

Actually, I do that anyway, but still, always handy to have something there as a standby, though innit ? ;) :D

Oh - by the way, for some strange and mysterious reason, after I had formatted my drive and put everything back on, the epson "properties" for some reason gave me the whole thing in PORTUGESE ! for reasons best known to itself, after re-installing umpteen times, deleting the other languages (most paticularly Portugese !) it STILL re-installs in Portugese ! Dont know why, and have now given up, and this prog seems to do most of what that did, only now, in ENGLISH ! ;) :D

Seems to have a few problems - looks like it may be an XP bug.

The drawback to reseating (in non-chipped models) to get some extra use out of the cartridges.
1. You risk a poor seal, and leaks or airlocks.
2. If you run the head dry, it may be damaged, or at best may take a long time (and ink waste) to re-prime.
3. It tends to put you out of step for changes

If the level reset works on those, it would avoid breaking the seal, and could be applied again (if required) after replacing with a full cartridge - at least, my recollection is that making an "out of schedule" cartridge change, put you out of step, perhaps the ink counting is just pretty useless.

lol had mine for well over a year now not had a problem i use my fake cartridge swap to get more use outta the cartridges and never had a problem or any messages ?!

I to use the trick of fooling the printer into thinking I've just put in a new cartridge(C40 UX non chipped), but this will not work on printers with the chipped cartridges (my 1290) and I believe this is what is meant by resetting the counter with this software.

Physically removing the cartridge/s, then replacing it is not good practise anyway, as this can cause lot's of problems like gumming up the printhead if ink is leaked in the process.

There used to be a device that would reset the cartridge chips, using this method I've managed to get nearly twice as much use as would normally.

My $.02 is the chips was meant to make them more money by eliminating the cheat method and appear to run out quicker as well.

JR Inkjet supplies, as seen on TV (QVC)

The "ZAP IT" - is £12.49 (UK) and will reset MOST chipped Epson Cartridges. They also have inks and a cartridges, and plenty of information online (and a helpline)

NB. Their "universal" ink is a compromise, to operate in a variety of models - it is therefore.
1. Dye based, not pigment
2. Not waterproof

One essential difference between inks is that some of the requirements for "bubblejet" operation (eg. boiling point), may compromise the formulation other uses. Essentially, it has to be compatible with the lowest common denominator, rather than being optimized.

In general, you COULD see a colour difference, and may need to apply some correction if your drivers allow it, especially if aiming for photo-accurate colour.

Is there a patch for that XP bug?

Looks like they hope to have it fixed in the next version - and there don't seem to be any previous versions floating around - a filemirror search wasn't any help.
