Elby Clone DVD - Oh dear oh dear.......

Going by a German computer mag who have done a comparison test with the latest Beta of the upcoming Clone DVD it really does not sound too good. :(

A member of the Clone.cd forums has looked at it and they said:-

Posted: Wed Jun 18, 2003 8:57 am Post subject: CloneDVD review in german computer magazine...!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

in the german computer magazine "c't" no. 11/2003 (page 124) is a review of CloneDVD from Elby!!! All in all it's very poor... :(

Details:

- breaks no CCS protection
- transcodes only the main movie, not the whole DVD
- needs same time like "DVD X Copy Express" for transcoding
- very (!) bad external DVD player compatibility

They also display the quality of 1000 frames in a grafic and the result is *very* identical to DVD shrink - only slower.

Seems to me that they don't beat existing products. :(

Herb

Woops!

If it's true this is bad. They really needed to come up big on this prog. Their already falling behind because of alcohol 120%.

Hi!

I have the c't @ my hands, the story is a little incomplete:

a) CSS-Protection, this is through new laws, in germany you are no longer allowed to sell software at shops that violates css, guess thats why it isnt supported. but we are used to that by now (DVDDecrypter, SmartRipper... ya know... its the same with InstantCopy) besides that , reading the whole article, found out, they use an external filter "AnyDVD" that does the css decryption. but there has been no word yet if it will deliver with it ?!?

b) only transcodes main movie in Beta 1, whole disc is announced for Beta 2 (who reads the small print, has an advantage). tested was only Beta 1

c) true, but here is the complete time chart (movie only / full dvd):

  • DVD2One 1.1.3 : 14/16 mins
    DVD95Copy 1.5 Beta 1: 38 / 48 mins
    DVDShrink 1.03 : 10 / 14 mins
    DVDXCopy XPress 2.0.0 : 19 / n.a. mins
    InstantCopy 7.0.1.119 : 69 / 86 mins
    elby CloneDVD Beta 1 : 19 / n.a. mins

so in average it isnt too bad, and hey BETA 1!

d) very (!) bad external DVD player compatibility - simply FALSE, there was a misreading of the legend of the comparsion chart!
It simply wasnt tested, so there is no testimony on the compatibility so far!

So after all, this doesnt seem to bad for a first beta!
And one more thing to point out !

trying to translate as close as possible :
elbys Clone DVD had the BEST JND-Metrix IQ, (QualityIndex), of all testet programs, even if 150MB where wasted, rated as very promising, easy to use interface and included burning engine.

so we should wait and see what the next betas bring.
you cant compare apples with pears!

hmm :)
Hopefully they will come on the market soon ....
Otherwise the others will blow ehm off !
and it really sux that it doesn´t do the DeCSS stuff, because if I want a solution, I want a all in one solution, like DCS provides.
Which is available in germany as well, so ..
What is the matter ???

have to restate that, the new copyright law isnt in effect yet, but it has been aproved.

As soon as it is in effect §95a says any software bypassing any effectiv technical measures, to protect the creators work, without authors approvement will be illegal along with that creation, distribution and selling of software will be illegal!.

no word when this will be in effect though...

so if you life in germany and consider buying such soft, do it while you can.....

daily new insane ideas from them on the radio...

but i guess its as good or should i say bad as everywhere else ?!

Greetnx

CloneDVD.. Not bad at all....

I don't know how you've tested this software or if we are talking of the same one...

cloneDVD 1.1.7.1 tested.

The software behaved exactly as one would expect, I have been woking with DVD software for a while now, and although I still prefer my old favorites IFOedit, VOBedit, as well as vStrip to work on heavy projects.

I was impressed with the speed vs Quality, and I think it is a software one should consider if they don't really understand DVD's IFO stucture, not to mention some sort od DVD2AVI combined with CCE or ReMpeg.
They give you a FULL 30 day trial, so you can test it with various DVD's and give it a rip....:)

Now about the ripping.... I've read quite a few reviews on various software dooing just about everything including your morning coffee.... but.... they don't rip ! Well I would agree with the software companies that don't necessarily want to be in the firing line of the movie companies. After all, there is a breach of copyrights... :) so le't not kid ourselves, let them write good code, and we'll take care of the ripping.
Obviusly every one has used DVDdecrypter or SmartRipper. A 5 year old would take 5 minutes to learn ..

On an other note, I'll mention that Elby is a Swiss company, not German.

Anyway here for my 2 cents....
Thought the thread title was a bit harsh and wanted to yell an opinon...

Cheers mates,
:p

Thanks for that! :)

Don't forget that the article was refering to the pre public release "Beta" and that Elby have made many changes for the better since those tests. ;)

I would agree with you though that the latest version is not that bad at all and this software has loads of potential for the future too.

I agree it was the Beta release...
No worries, I am interested to see where they go from there... might add an automatic VIDEO_TS.IFO creation if it doesn't exist, etc..

But the transcription protocol they use is not bad.. of course for better quallity you are better off with a decrypter-reencrypter like Pinnacle Instant copy or the usal suspects ReMpeg, CCE, etc, if you don't mind the wait... and a bit more work.

We could imagine a bit more flexibility in the VOB & PGC selection and manipulation. But then it would have to be called PRO version and we loose the initial idea of making life easy...:)

Take it easy,
cheers,
:p
