E-ide Cd-rw Installation

 Hello,
This is my first time, so bear with me. I purchased the Lite on 52x32x52x CD reWriter, and installed it in my Dell Computer. However, the darn thing just doesn't want to work at all.
I removed the cd player that came with the Dell computer, and kept the old connections internally the same (connected the existing cable to the new cd rewriter), then loaded the software that came with the rewriter.
The only thing I can think of right now is that when I pulled out the old player and connected the new one is that I left the master/slave/cl connector as cl.
Should I change the setting to master or slave, since I only have the cd rewriter installed (no other cd player installed).
Sorry this took so long, next time will be a shorter message.

Depends if they actually put 2 IDE cables in there!

With Dual IDE, the HD should be Master on the primary, and the Optical drive (if only one) should be Master on the secondary - if they share a data cable, the optical must be slave to the HD.

Recheck cable seating, as when removing the old drive, you may have lifted the motherboard end of the cable - and recheck cable polarity - the red stripe on the data cable (pin 1) usually seems to end up facing the power connector (If I remember right) - they SHOULD be keyed, but often aren't.

If a drive has a headphone socket and an audio play button, use that to confirm basic function - if you you can play a CD to headphones that way, it confims that MOST major functions are working, and the problem lies in software or the cable/interface area.

If the tray ejects and retracts from the tray button, that confirms power and logic, but nothing else.
