dvd writer combo

I don't know a single DVD burner that cannot burn CDR... DVD-RAM burners excluded- but I guess you don't want to buy a DVD-RAM burner.

Thank you for your replies. From what I've heard, burning a dvd-r @4x speed isn't really @4x if using a combo, they say it's only @2x speed. Is it true? If not, what kind of dvd writer do you recommend if that's the case?

What I've heard and read is that the right media for the right drive and it will burn at 4x also a good 4x media will burn at 8x with out problem thats what I've read. But what I've also read if you want the drive to last buy the right drive for the right job!! So if you buy a DVD burner use it for burning dvds not ripping DVDs or burning cdrs. See I have 3 drives so if you have the space thats what I would recommend! The liteon DVD-Roms they say are one of the best for ripping, I know I have no complaints with mine and if I did being its two years old I would just buy a new one for less than $30. The following is a list you might want to do your home work on. If I was to buy a drive today I might buy the OptoRite, I've read a lot of good about it.

Plextor PX -708A Free Shipping =>$234.99

Pioneer DVR-106 Free Shipping => $157.00
Sony DW-U10A Free Shipping => $154.00
OptoRite DD0203 Free Shipping => $119.49
NEC ND-1300A Free Shipping => $119.00
NU TECHNOLOGY 8XDVD+rRW Free Shipping =>$148.95

Or if you can wait a month or two you will have a few other 8x drivers to choose from and I bet the price will be no where near the rip off price of the plexcrap. :D But god :rolleyes: I believe your talking 7 or 8 minutes in time between 4x and 8x. But for just about the money you save on not buying it you could get a 100 pack of 4x ritek media. :D :cool:
As far as NU goes I have no clue if their good or bad but its not a bad price. :cool:
Good luck.

@ spiderman

DVDR burners are not really combo's they just have the facility to burn CDR as well

& I agree with PC GUY

So if you buy a DVD burner use it for burning dvds not ripping DVDs or burning cdrs.
although sometimes they rip better than a DVD ROM

:cool:

A good argument, is always to use your most expensive drive, for the things ONLY it can do.

Many DVD writers have a really lacklustre speed for CD writing anyway, with a few exceptions (the Optorite being one). The Optorite also has HD-Burn (double capacity on a CD - but don't expect to read it in anything else!). IF you can get HD-Burn to work with any degree of readability at all, it may cover those pccasions when something is too big for CD-R, but you don't want to use a DVD on it.

Reading another forum though, it seems that another form of extra CD capacity is virtually unusable at 1.4x normal, but 1.2x normal can read in some drives.

If HD-Burn is not an instant coaster, it will be more susceptible to degradation, and will only be readable in the HD-Burn drive (though it's said that DVD-ROM drives could be able to read it with a firmware update).
