DVD to SVCD question...

ok, i tried CM's method for DVD to SVCD using DVD2SVCD and the CCE...

did something wrong, and i would like to try using the TMPGEnc method...and was wondering if the quality is that bad???

for instance, here would be the steps...


rip with Smartripper,
use DVD2AVI,
Use TMPGEnc, and instead of selecting VCD template, i would use SVCD template...

would i be losing any quality?

i would prefer using it this way, any reasons why i should stay away from this??? thanks!!!


and can someone give me the settings for TMPGEnc if this way is ok to use?

If u use tmpgenc for svcd then just do as per vcd but just change template as you say.
I find the tmpgenc method takes more time and the picture is not quite up to CCE standards.
The audio is also thinner and does not seem to work as well on a prologic system.
The audio problem can be fixed by using dvd2svcd and just selecting tmpgenc instead of CCE.
The video quality of Tmpgenc svcd is not bad, in fact its good.
However with CCE its very good!
The choice is yours.

ok, well letme try with CCE and stuff again...

but the thing is...
when i start, it does all this other program stuff
like DVD2AVI in the background(i can see it in the taskbar)
then it makes somekind of audio thing??????!
and then i see i think it's CCE running, when it says how much time and stuff left...

im doing a 90 min movie in 3 pass

does that seem right? what dvd2svcd is doing??? thanks

CUZ it toook long for the dvd2avi and audio extration and stuff before it actually started to encode...

I have beeen on a "stag" night tonight so forgive my bluntness!!
It takes a sh*t load of time to encode dvd2svcd with cce.....
But in the end the result is superb!!!
Just be patient. Its worth it!!

just use tmpgenc and use one of the vcd templates unlock the bitrate and make it 2000 kb cbr then make the audio a lil higher in frequency and then encode it it will be less tim e then svcd since its in mpeg 1 format and the quality will be the same as an svcd then when u go to burn it use nero and burn like a regular vcd then play it in a player u will lose no quality what so ever if u think u need better picture quality eithjer increas the bitrate or the resalutio to that of cvd standardxs which is 352 x 480 which is actually ont only vcd but also dvd standard when making ur own dvd disks

can u help me do that? i dont know what to do...

which template do i select? i have the TMPGEnc wizard version...

can you help me make a template for vcd so the quality is a lot higher? thanks!

aimunregistrd, I would not suggest you start down the road of makeing very out of spec SVCD or VCD. Stay with standard formats.

In DVD2SVCD, yes you can select TMPGEnc if you really want to, select VBR 2 pass as thats the best it can do. The resultant SVCD will be good but would be better if you selected CCE 3 pass. TMPGEnc is very very slow compared to CCE, so a 3 pass CCE encode (actually does 4 passes) is actually about the same time to do a 2 pass with TMPGEnc.

Converting DVD to SVCD does take many many hours and depends mostly on the speed of your CPU.

DVD2SVCD, first extracts Subtitles if you chose them, then extracts the audio, then down-mixes and converts to MPA format. It then converts any still pictures then starts to encode the video. This takes the longest time. It does 1 pass to make a *.VAF file then uses that file and does a further 3 passes. It then joins the video file (*.mpv) with the audio file (*.mpa) to make an MPG file and at the same time cut it to CD size. If you selected to make an image, it then creates Cue/Bin files from each MPG file. Yes, your right it can take a long time but it does it all automatically for you, all you need it time.

CM, but when it's all done, the end result, is it .mpv? or .mpg???

cuz i tihnk im getting confused there...

and how would i know which file is cd1, cd2, or cd3?

Read my above post, I said It then joins the video file (*.mpv) with the audio file (*.mpa) to make an MPG file I thought that explained exactly what it makes.


If you chose NOT to make an image, you end up with MPG files, such as

bbmpeg_muxed_file00.mpg
bbmpeg_muxed_file01.mpg
bbmpeg_muxed_file02.mpg

I think you can work out which one is CD1, CD2, etc.

If you chose to make an Image with VCDXBuild, you will end up with files like:

CD_Image_File_CD1.bin
CD_Image_File_CD1.cue
CD_Image_File_CD2.bin
CD_Image_File_CD2.cue

Again its not difficult to work it out.

Do me a favour, just extract one chapter from a DVD and actually run DVD2SVCD. Will take the whole of 5-10min and you will see exactly what the program does and the files you end up with. Do an image, dont make an image, change audio, do all sorts of things and compare results. You will be amaized at the things it will show you.
