Dvd to dvd burning

hey, if i buy this dvd writer: http://www.btecanada.com/catalog/pr...roducts_id=1842

it says that it burns at 12x dvd+r, first off what's the difference between the + and - r formats and are 12x discs widely found in canada (if there are such a thing)?

also, i want to use my external drive (i have a usb 2.0 enclosure) in conjunction to my gateway 505x so i can read a dvd-r with the laptop drive and copy it with the external drive.

Is there a free program which will allow me to backup my dvds or do i have to burn it to my hd first so that i can get rid of the write protection? I'm using dvd shrink right now but it seems like it doesn't have a direct copy over feature.

Any thoughts?

ya i've read those, it doesn't discuss how to go from drive to drive though,
skipping burning it onto a hard drive, is there any way to do this?

Only if it DVD5 to DVD5 if its a DVD9 you have to make it smaller in size so it will fit on DVD5. So in that case you would have to go to the HD first.
For your sake I hope your have some space on your HD.

There is a way to avoid ripping to harddisk- using AnyDVD.
Actually this method is SLOWER than ripping to harddisk first, and way more prone to coasters.

ya i guess i was just lazy haha
it takes about 90 mins to back up a dvd with dvd shrink and my 2x dvd burner and i was looking for something that would make that a little faster. I guess i can deal with 90 mins though haha.

Thanks for the help,
