DVD to DivX with Surround Sound?

I am trying to create a DivX of a DVD but want to retain the 5.1 surround sound rather than converting to MP3. I have been trying to do this using SimpleDivX by choosing the option for AC3 sound in 6 channels but the resulting files do not appear to actually be surround sound. Can anyone tell me if/how I can make a DivX file whilst retaining surround sound?

Yeah, either just keep the original AC3 steam or re-encode it to 5.1 vorbis or 5.1 AAC/HE AAC.

No idea about using SimpleDivX though. Also if you go with the vorbis or AAC/AAC+ then you can forget about using the AVI container.

Oh yeah, you could also use 5.1 RealAudio or WMA, once again, forget about using AVI as a container.

Thank you for your reply. I am new to this so I'm not sure how to go about doing the things you suggest. Can anyone give me simple instructions (for SimpleDivX or alternative free packages with details of where I can download them) on how to create a DivX file with surround sound? Additionally, will I need plugins to play it back with Windows Media Player?

For playback, you need an AC3 codec/filter (assuming AC3 is used) such as the free ac3filter and either a player that supports AC3/AVI's (assuming that you are using the AVI container) or a seperate AC3/AVI parser filter such as Gabest's or mpgaudio.ax. WMP does not natively support AC3/AVI's so you will definatly need the parser filter.

Should have also mentioned you can have DTS if you want.

If you want instructions (from me) then you are going to need to pick a container and audio format as muxing AC3 and DivX in an AVI is somewhat different to 5.1 vorbis in OGM, 5.1 AAC in MP4 or 5.1 RA in MKV.

Thanks celtic_druid.

I would really like to use the DivX avi format with the original DVD soundtrack format (which I assume is AC3?), splitting the file to span a couple of CDs to get good quality. Can this be done simply?

Before you explain to me any further methods for doing it, let me just explain where I am up to now. I have already converted the file to DivX (still have DVD rip on HDD as well though) with SimpleDivX. In here, I selected the option for AC3 sound at 6 channels. The whole video processed but then when I tried to play it Windows Media Player threw up a message saying it could not locate the correct Codec to play the sound. Eventually I found and installed AC3 Filter on the internet - but it didn't help because although the sound then played, it sounded like I was underwater!

I had a look at the DivX webpages and came across a demo version of WinDVD5 which can play DivX, so I downloaded and installed that. It plays the file OK complete with sounds, although the sound is very quiet and I have to turn up the volume of my speakers way past normal to listen to it. The other odd thing is that when it plays, my speakers (with the WinDVD SP/DIF setting on) should detect the sound input type and automatically switch to that type - in the case of this DVD it should be Dolby Digital - but they do not change - which suggests to me the I'm not actually gettting true surround sound?

As you might tell, I'm feeling a bit out of my depth with all this - so if you can help me out I would really appreciate it - but please make sure you're instructions are idiot-proof!!

Thanks in advance.

First thing I would do is use something like GSpot to see what audio stream(s) are in the AVI.

If I wanted an AVI with AC3 I would use VirtualDubMod.
