DVD to DivX audio sync or file size problem; Chickenman please

DVD to DivX audio sync or file size problem; HELP please

I’m trying to make a DivX copy of a DVD cartoon movie (Dysney, Mulan).
I’ve successfully done several copies of other movies following ChickenMan Tuts (they are great, thanks Chickman). But with this movie the audio/video sync will come and go in the final DivX copy. With the same method proved successful with other movies. I’ll try to be as detailed as may be needed here.

I’m using SmartRipper, and extracting just the video and spanish audio stream (I use stream processing and remap the spanish audio stream to 0x80) always. And Vidomi469 to the DivX conversion.

I've try using DivX3.11alpha 2 pass, and with DivX 4.12 and then 5.02pro (Vidomi 2 pass mode) with the same audio/video coming and going out of sync along the video. Mostly in sync but out of it at several portions of the movie, the same ones every time. And the audio/video are in perfect sync if I watch the extracted vob with say PowerDVD.

So I did a little research, here in this forum and the web. The only specific mention I found, related to this kind of problem, was in the Vidomi guide. They mention 2 ways to fix this problem. In Vidomi Video options you can try some of the IVTC options in the video framerate drop down list, or select “decode MPEG as film”. The IVTC option seemed more complicated to me and you are forced to go by the RGB32 colour space, so I tried “decode MPEG as film”.

With decode MPEG as film, everything else the same, the audio/video sync came out perfect, video looks great but… But every time now I got 2 DivX files, one 715 MB with ¾ of the movie, and the last ¼ in a second 225MB file !!!!! I’ve rechecked the parameters selected for the output file size (1 media disk, 698MB) or target size 698MB, with the same results every time. And every time are 4 hours of 100% CPU use !!! of my Athlon 900.

So after 8 to 10 trials I’m becoming a little frustrated here, and in need of some clever advice.
Please chicman, or someone else who may have found what to do in this situations, I’ll really appreciate your advice. I want a good audio/sync DivX in 1 CDR 80min.

Thanks in advance

there are several ways you can do this. I'll lay out 1 method (this is from a tut I made also *which might be posted here in the future):

Firstly use DVD2AVI to extract the audio out of the vob files (dvd rips) from your HDD. Use the method described by ChickenMan in one of his tuts (but I'll explain it here).
Load the vob files in DVD2AVI and then under the Audio for Channel Format click on Auto Select and for Dolby Digital select Demux (same thing for MPEG Audio). For 48->44.1KHz have it as Off and the rest leave alone. Now Save as Project (not Save AVI).
This will give you either a wav or ac3 audio file to work with.

Now use a program called HeadAC3he (you can get all these programs at (h**p://www.doom9.org/). Load the wav or ac3 sound file into HeadAC3he and change the destination format as MP3. Leave everything else as default. Now click on Options>> button 2 times till you're at the LAME Configuration table.
Here I leave the preset to Alt ABR. Mode to ABR. Bitrate I have all set to the same amount (whether 96-128 *you don't need more than 128) *min/average/max. Now just hit the start button and wait 10-30minutes or so.
Now you will have a usable mp3 file.
Go back and encode your movie to divx again using ChickenMan's method, only this time do not encode with sound.

We're almost there =).
Now use NanDub and open up the avi (divx) movie and under Video select Direct stream copy. Now under Audio select (VBR) MP3 audio and select the mp3 you made with HeadAC3he. Also make sure you have Direct stream copy selected under Audio.
Now all you have to do is Save as AVI and it will mux them together for you in a couple of minutes. You should have a perfectly sync movie now.

*important* When you encode the movie in Vidomi, make sure you do the whole thing, do not select a source range (process the whole thing *otherwise your sound will be off).

I hope that clears things up on the audio out of sync problem.
If not, post again any questions/concerns

PS
for concerns about the size (if you get a problem sometimes with vidomi) then use the method I described in this thread:
http://forum.cdrsoft.cc/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15362

good luck

I think Shadoe has answered all the questions. I have also changed the tutorial to read for DivX5 use DivX Networks (Two Pass) instead of DivX Networks Vidomi VBR (Two Pass) as it is less problematic.

Thank you very much, shadoe & chick. I'll try your suggestions (somewhat latter, I've to work now) and tomorrow will get back to report on how it went. Thank you guys.

took me same time to gather everything together but I did exactly as you told me, and guess what?

IT CAME OUT PERFECT !!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

shadoe_phantom, the little tutorial you gave me for this works wonders, and having all together (all different apps) is not difficult at all to follow and get great, I mean great, results

thanks again to shadoe and chick, you are the best, this forum is by far the best thing I've found in all my web surfing (don't want to say in my life, my wife might not appreciate it)

:D

lol.
Glad it worked out for you ponzan. Future-wise those tools will come in handy for most situations (you can even use nandub or virtualdub to cut your avi into smaller parts if need be).

PS
although I don't do things much for the thanks here (just help out to help out when I can), it is nice to see people who bother to say thanks ('cause many just don't and you wonder if things went ok or not lol).
