dvd to cd-r ????????

ok really ?? can you burn dvds to cd-r with just a cd burner and no dvd drive or burner ??? Come on now someone give me the honest answer, i've heard different things from deifferent people ???

In short........... No

There are many programs which try this line.

The simple fact is you need a dvd drive to read a dvd, and a dvd burner to burn one.

What this refers to is converting the dvd to either vcd or svcd.

ok so, there is no way to burn to a cd-r without a dvdrom drive, i thought i have seen adds that say you can with just a cd-rw drive, is this at all possible, i don't care what format just as long as i can copy a movie to cd-r.

plain simple english is that the actual READ LASER of a DVD rom is completely different to the one thats in a normal CDROM/CDRW

the main difference is the actual beam its self in frequency :)

Cdrom Laser Wavelength 780 nm (infrared)

DVDrom Laser Wavelength 650 and 635 nm (red)

If yer none technical then this is garbage to you

In simple terms its impossible to read a DVD ROM without a DVD capable laser !!! :)

in one word YES :)

but ......it cannot be done like duplicating a cd rom the data has to be compressed in one way or another as 4.7gb DVD will physically just not fit a 700mb 80min cdr/cdrw :)

CM's Tutorials - all is explained.

Seriously though, in transferring a DVD to CD, you have several choices.

What format? - DivX/Xvid is generally best for compression (= fewer CD's or better quality)
But if you want to play it in a DVD player, you'll have to choose SVCD or VCD.

Standard VCD is 1:1 CD capacity to programme - so a 74min CD will hold approximately the same in video.

SVCD can offer excellent quality at 2:1 - but you'll only get 36 minutes on there, or better quality than VCD at the same utilization - and fit more in, with degrading quality.

Take a look at the price of a DVD writer though - the price of older 2x models is slipping down - I paid more than that for my first writer, and I wasn't an early adopter!!!!

Yes Follow the tutes on this forum to turn DVD's into VCD or SVCD
