DVD to .avi probs

I used Smartripper + Vidomi to encode a short 45 min film.
I set the media size to 699 megs and media to 1.
However the first time i did it, it split the film into 6*699 segments. Not sure why it did that? Anyway i re-did it but set the total target size as 699megs and this time it's come out as 1*699. Perfect - except it won't play in Windows Media Player, whereas the 6*699 one did.
What gives?

O.k. i've tried it over and over and the same thing happens.
Can anyone recommend the 'next best' piece of software which will let me turn the .vob files into an .avi of my choice in size.

if you looked things up here on the board, you will note that windows media player is a bit buggy on what it accepts.
Firstly you should be setting your movie size to around 690 (give around a 10MB leway), but more importantly I suggest you use another player (like zoom player) to play the files after.
There are many more, but windows media player is known to often not playback some DivX files.

Also do make sure you follow the instructions presented by ChickenMan on using Vidomi, though if you run into size issues with defaul settings, then switch from:

DivxX Networks(two pass) or Divx Networks Vidomi VBR(two pass) with Divx pro 5.02? depends on if you get the wrong file size (try switching to other if this occurs)

good luck

.....

Well the way i did it was with Divx Networks Vidomi VBR (two pass) using all the suggested settings from Chickenman - so that is using DivX 5.0.2 i presume (which is the codec i have installed).
The strange thing is that with the media set to 1, it does the film in 6*699 segments and plays beautifully in WMP. But like i said when setting target media size it does it in the correct size but won't play back in WMP.
So you think it is a player problem? Seems like Vidomi is a bit buggy if it just picks 6*699 segments out of thin air.
I'll try again with total target size and a few different players but i'm not sure it'll help.

like I said, change the target size to 690 and DivX Network Vidomi (VBR) to DivX Network (2 pass).
Also in the settings for 5.02 have the bitrate set to 700-780.
It will work. Very common issue with people and these settings do work, but often people use zoom player or some other player to playback with after (as windows media player is buggy).

Yep the switch from DivX Network Vidomi VBR to just DivX Network did the trick.
Thanks shadoe.

glad it worked. That was just one possibility, but I have come across it often enough to notice it is one of the biggest issues.
Happy encoding =)
