DVD to avi/mpg/mpg2 Multiples

I have been searching the site thoroughly for a discussion on ripping DVDs to anything BUT vcd/divx. I currently have a set of 3 movies (1hr, 30mins, 30mins) that I would like to put together - BUT do not want to do the methods mentioned in tutorials that allow me to do it that way. I am looking for a program that is preferably freeware that rips dvds to .avi or .mpg or .mpg2 no matter the size. I would use the divx method, however when I go to burn it I won't be able to utilize it.

I am looking to create a DVD with the software Adobe Encore. I know how to use it very well and am familiar with it. I enjoy creating my own menus and doing as I please with it. So, thats why I would like 3 individual .avi/mpg/mpg2 files that I can work with and create new timelines with and then incorporate into one main menu that branches out. Does such a decent software exist and perform this function? Thanks.

You can't author a DVD with AVI's. If you want to mix AVI's and MPG's, burn them as data.

Any program should work no matter the size. For MPG, try TMPGEnc. For MPEG2, CCE and for AVI VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod or AVS2AVI and AVIMuxGUI.

You only have a total of 2hours there though, encoding each part with CCE you should get fairly decent quality full DVD res MPEG2. The original audio streams can simply be reused.

Yes, I completely understand that I cannot auther DVDs using .avis and that i need to encode them. That I can do, my question is striclty ripping the DVD TO an avi and once I ahve that I can encode that to mpg2 and be able to manipulate it w/ whatever I want from there. I am only looking for the application that will rip the DVD to an avi/mpg/mpg2 format. Thanks

I really don't care for necessarily going to mpg2 ... I do understand the processes and concepts involved in going from DVD -> mpg2 -> avi -> mpg2 .

My question is basically - how do I rip a DVD to my hard drive so I can manipulate it with Adobe Encore DVD?

I know that the file extensions that it can work with are .avi, mpg, mpg2 soo...thats the only reason that I am looking for those possible conversion file types. I am currently using the product(s) DVD-to-AVI and DVD-to-MPEG shareware that I have a trial on. I was wondering if there was any freeware or very good inexpensive shareware that will perform this function. Thanks

If you rip the DVD with DVD Decrypter in IFO mode, it auto selects the main movie only. Turn on Stream Processing and untick any languages & subtitles you dont want. In Tools/Setting/IFO Mode, set the File spritting to NONE. Then start the process. Soon you will have one large *.VOB file on your HD, just rename to *.MPG (cause thats what it is, an mpeg2 file).
