i want to keep video quality to a hign standard. at what compression percentage does the quality really start to suffer. what percentage should i aim for to keep the movie looking the best.

there's no single threshold that marks the line between good quality and bad quality. it will depend on the dvd itself, as some dvds are harder to transcode then others. you'll just have to try and see.

In DVDShrink my rule of thumb is that if the compression level is more than 85% and the movie worthy of high quality image, I use DVDFab to split the complete original dvd to 2 dvd disks. There is a noticeable degradation of image quality with more than 85% compression, at least to my eyes. For some people, esp those with HD tv's even 95% is too much.

samsam13 i did a full back up of my extraordinary league of gentleman at 59%
the trailers at the begining were broken up slightly but the rest of the film was lush.....i normally work to around 75%........ good luck
if all else fails just back up the film without all the junk
