DVD-RW vs DVD+R??

Greetings one & all.............

I've just discovered this site & been following the advice re 'ripping/burning' CD's - thanks a lot. I've just installed an 8x DVD+/-RW in my PC. The main reason being to duplicate some DVD's for my son, so he can keep them in his bedroom & leave the originals in some sort of tidy order (He's already managed to spill orange over one of my favourite Bond's!) I've managed to put one on a R/W disc but it won't play in his DVD player. I've read the manual & it apparently won't play DVD R/Ws. (It works in the more expensive player downstairs). His player should, however, play DVD+R discs. I've tried burning onto these, but it stops after 23% & won't go any further. Am I doing something wrong? Can I not use DVD+R with my re-writer? I can see I'm going to be left with the scenario of him using the originals & the duplicates going into the DVD cases ............ defeats the object really??

Any comments gratefully received.........

At what speed are you trying to burn? Not all dvd+r can handle 8x burning speed.
As for your drive, check the manufacturer's site, they usually have a list of which media are supported for your burner.:)

Ok, I'm confused here. I've done a search and have come up even more confused. Whats the difference between the -r and the +r?

the differences are pretty much transparent to most users. the most important thing is to use good quality media and use whichever type of media your dvd player is capable of playing.

His player should, however, play DVD+R discs.
do you know this from past experience?

Thanks for the postings everyone........................

I'm a techno novice I'm afraid, but have checked the 'hardware profile' of my DVD writer, & it should burn to DVD+Rs. However I just bought a pack of 5 cheap DVD +Rs off the shelf (no thought put into it I'm afraid - & since 'ruined' them all with 23% of recording on each one!). The burning speed I was using was 4x. I'll follow your advice & get a better quality DVD (-R?) & see if it works.

Thanks..........

Use GOOD DVD-R more compatable with more Standalones (DVD-R with Ritek G04 are Good)

'Poacher'

I ordered the Ritek G04 as suggested, and they came yesterday.............

..... they work PERFECTLY!

Thanks for the good advice everyone.....

(PS since discovered that the RWs played in my son's PS2, so we could have managed if all else failed ...... but much happier with this solution....Be Lucky)
